In any case the scenario the weapon system was designed for was an anti-ship cruise missile attack on the carrier or escorts, air-launched from Russian bombers. Such an attack would normally be first detected and verified by a dedicated flying radar platform, so there wouldn't be much mystery about the nature of the target. The Phoenix could reach out and engage either the Russian bombers or the missiles they launched.

“Guns” are not very effective against balloons or semi-rigid airships. The rounds just pass through the cloth, creating small holes relative to the volume of the supporting gas. Tracers would probably ignite hydrogen, but after the Hindenburg, nobody uses hydrogen any more.
A few years back the Canadians tried pumping ~1000 20mm cannon rounds at a balloon. It took the thing 3 days to come down.

Realistically though, this is probably China trying out a few things.
I’ve been trying to master Arabic for 40+ years. It’s very similar linguistically to Hebrew, but phonetically it has so many strange sounds, plus such a big gap between the colloquial and the written language, that I doubt I ever will get the hang of it. But one tries and tries and tries.
...so we hit it with a missle and blew it to smithereens making any indentification or study of the object impossible.

Hebrew does seem much easier from what I have heard. My Japanese is pretty good and that is almost identical grammatically to Korean although Korean pronunciation is way harder (despite being entirely phonetic) which would be a major stumbling block for me. Japanese sounds are mostly a subset of the sounds of American English. Just learn whatever you have a passion and interest in.
This is either a very serious situation that could affect the entirety of mankind or the latest is a series of incredible ruses/distractions.

IMHO, I don’t believe destroying our electronic infrastructure would behoove China. The probability of mutual destruction should make them think twice.
