Is a Democrat headed for the Mississippi governor’s mansion?
The hill ^ | 02/12/2023 | Albert Hunt

Now that you all have placed your Super Bowl bets and don’t want to be a chalk-eater, here’s a good underdog wager: A Democrat will win the Mississippi governor’s race this year.

Yeah, sounds crazy.

The deep-red Magnolia State went overwhelmingly for Donald Trump, hasn’t voted for a Democratic president since 1976, for a U.S. Senator in 40 years — and not for a Democratic governor in almost a quarter century.

But incumbent Gov. Tate Reeves is not very popular. A Siena college poll last month showed 57 percent would prefer someone else, and Reeves barely leads the Democratic candidate, Brandon Presley — it’s within the margin of error.

While I know little about Mississippi politics, I question this thesis since it comes from the very partisan and leftist The Hill.

Siena College Poll is a joke, it is a paid for democrat distraction operation.

Al Hunt is he still around?

The Democrats are running a Presley in Mississippi a cousin of the “King” Elvis.

Yeah, that has traction with voters also there is also inflation and poverty and Presley seems to be on the right side of that.

Has Tate Reeves apologized for imposing a COVID mask order n his state. He did it after Deborah Birx was on TV saying they were needed in the “Gulf States”?

I hold Republican governors accountable for their promotion of the vaccines and mask orders during COVID.

I would not vote for Reeves if I lived down there that’s for sure over the mask order.

Mississippi is 44% non-white.

Mississippi non-whites vote at least 80% Democrat.

That means white voters must have heavy turn out and vote at least 70% Republican to win a state wide election.

Not always easy to do that if you have an unpopular Republican candidate.

The source may be tainted, but sometimes the truth hurts. When a Republican governs as a Democrat, why vote for the GOP?

“I question this thesis”

Thesis? More like wishful thinking.

Why vote for a Republican??
Because once you have a Democrat, they will install all the mechanisms so that a Republican can never win again!!
How stupid can you guys get?? Take out your frustrations in the primaries!

Wouldn’t surprise me. The “deep red” state of Kentucky is on the cusp of re-electing a Democrat governor who endorsed Biden and is a covid-fascist.

Spot on. Reeves choked on the China virus, but allowing a Democrat to walk into the governor’s mansion? Mindless.

I remember Al Hunt and his comic side-kick Maxie Shields.

Hunt had white hair 50 years ago. Thought he was in the zombie grave long ago.

Small correction, Mississippi non-whites vote about 97% Democrat.

I'm from Mississippi. Our state is often described as "deep red" but it's really not. Over the last 30 years or so we've typically voted along racial lines, almost all whites voted republican and minorities voted democrat due to the massive welfare spending in the state. It only stays red if the whites vote en bloc, blacks always vote that way so you can count on the minority vote ALWAYS going to the democrat. It only takes a few white votes switching to completely flip the state. A few of the bigger cities like Hattiesburg and Oxford are becoming more "progressive" as they become havens for the gay hipster crowds since they're university towns. There is also the urban white female vote to worry about also that votes feelings instead of pocketbooks.

Tate Reeves is generally a good governor but doesn't have a very good public presence. He's kind of dumpy looking, acted kind of wishy washy during Covid, and doesn't have a great speaking presence. I looked up Presley, it looks like he's lost a bunch of weight recently and they've polished his image up. I'm sure the democrats will throw untold amounts of money into the state if they think they can take the governorship. He's got the same last name as Elvis who is almost a God here, Wikipedia says he's his second cousin and lost 216 lbs (holy cow!).

It's going to be tough.

I detest Democrats but Brandon Presley is a decent man IMO. Reeves rode in on the coattails of Presley has been active in Mississippi politics and shown to have some traditional conservative views. I think he’ll beat Reeves.

But the teacher’s & state employees unions love him! Never mind that their pensions are very insolvent. The previous GOP made some tentative baby steps to solve that, and the voters threw him out. He was “harming the children” don’t you know by doing that!
