“KC-135s are based at Fairchild, not McChord; I don’t know about KC-46.”
Perhaps the original poster’s intent was to say Washington state and not just McChord.
In any event, I think the KC-46 is mostly based in the Midwest and some eastern states.

“ONLY if it takes you an HOUR to cover the 80 miles.”
EXACTLY! 100 MPH into a 20 MPH headwind covers 80 miles. The MPH was, I thought, self-explanatory for my very basic explanation. Miles = miles; Per is self-evident; Hour = hour.

A KC-135R did fly a route from Fairchild to near Great Falls and back last night; I watched it on Flightradar24.

I drive 55 MPH on my way from town to home: which is 7 miles total distance.

My girlfriend lives directly in-line with Fairchild runway 23. Usually on the approach side of the field.

You are right.
Somehow my brain messed up the data and thought some was missing.
distance = speed * time
time = distance/speed

First off, airspeed is different from groundspeed if there is any wind or environmental influence (such as altitude).
Driving your car, there is NO airspeed; it is ALL groundspeed.
So, if you drove your car at 55 MPH you covered that 7 miles in about 7.64 minutes.

I’ve seen birds, flying at top speed (whatever it was) staying apparently motionless in a high wind (whose speed was matched by the birds).
I’ve also seen them going BACKWARDS in a fast-moving air mass.
Ground speed = (+ or -)airmass speed + object speed(+ or-)
thus
80MPH = -20MPH +100MPH
(Of course vectors are involved if not going directly into or outof the wind)

We sometimes see hawks in our neighborhood, and they just “hover,” seeming not to move at all. They simply face into the specific wind direction that allows them to do that. Amazing creatures.
Last year I found a dead hawk in my backyard, with a dead squirrel clutched in one of its talons. I have no idea what killed it, but it was a couple feet away from a power pole, so maybe it received a shock somehow.
