Thousands of Californians leaving the Golden State looking to escape the rampant homelessness and high cost of living are landing in neighboring Nevada, overrunning the state's few major cities.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Reno area has seen 25,000 new residents according to reports and is expected to be one of the fastest growing cities in the coming years.
An article published by the Los Angeles Times on Thursday found that the droves of residents are moving to northern Nevada and causing issues with pre-settled residents who are seeing rising prices and traffic troubles.
The former-Californians are searching for the 'perfect elixir — a California bender without the hangover.'
California residents and businesses began moving to the northern Nevada region back in 2014 when Tesla started building a battery pack factory outside Reno.
The Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center has become the world's largest industrial center and covers 166 square miles.
The center is so expansive it is roughly the size of New Orleans, Louisiana.
The biggest appeal for business owners? Massive tax breaks.
Reno's facility also offers companies a quick permitting process, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The business moves and the COVID-19 pandemic spurred a new wave of Californians heading out east and recreating their California lifestyle as a 'technology hub with comfortable communities, economic growth and mountain views — without California's problems.'
'Here, they can retire or work from home or the ski slopes while keeping close ties to the San Francisco Bay Area or Los Angeles,' the LA Times reported.
Along with their move, however, has come the development of luxury apartments and homes, as shopping districts and more amenities.

I was totally unaware that Nevada is so pro-active in bringing in industry. But industry needs water. So they better use it sparingly. My guess is that new industrial processes are stricter with the water consumed.
Seems like they are voting like they did in California as well. Yes I know we got the governor but not the senate seat which would have been better. Of course both would be super.
I find that very hard to believe. Can that possibly be true?
Maybe it is the largest “industrial center” measured in area, but what about output, value of products, number of employees, number of companies, etc? “Largest” is vague. Also, what is the definition of “Industrial Center”?
Thank God Californians are fleeing somewhere else than Idaho.
“Thousands of Californians leaving the Golden State looking to escape... are landing in neighboring Nevada, overrunning the state’s few major cities”
Just like locusts, they destroyed the host and are now looking for new areas to devour.
When then say “Californians”, they really mean all those anchor babies born to illegals for the last 50 years. These Californians are human sewage. The type love Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. /spit
Ask anyone native to Idaho. Same thing. Boise especially but even in Bellevue/Hailey where a friend lives they are obnoxious about everything - including water rights. Only bright side is that said friend will make a whopping capital gain when she sells out and leaves.
“The Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center has become the world’s largest industrial center and covers 166 square miles.”
That’s a stretch considering that the industrial area of Eastern China covers about 1,000,000 square miles.
Pretty sure this is one of those pieces written by someone who has never been there. We semi-retired in Reno 3 years ago as we all (coincidentally) heard of this kovid krap the first time around. It was great for the better part of the first year being so different from the upper Midwest where we are from.
But after awhile you begin to miss water, green things that grow - anything besides desert life. Then came two summers of the Kalifornia wildfires where you couldn’t leave the house and some hiking areas in Carson City were death sentences from the heavy smoke. Our area was quite nice only a few homes from the Truckee River but when the kovid nonsense started so came the Californians and the homeless that ruined everything. Had to kick these scumbags off the porch a few times, their shopping carts everywhere and the list goes on. There have always been autos with CA plates there, but not 8 of 10 in an intersection. Tiny worthless homes that would be teardowns anywhere else were suddenly bought at outrageous prices yet no one ever moves in, yep there is no state income tax in Nevada and Californians were “working from home,” yeah right.
So we moved back to the Great Lake state, most water in 50 light years, endless green around and rather bucolic in its own way, never thought we’d miss winter!
Also having lived outside of Detroit for many decades there is no other place on Earth that can out manufacture that area (economy aside) and have no idea how the author came up with their stats, the population of the Detroit/Ann Arbor area is greater than the entire state of Nevada.
It is however a great place for a vacation but not to live there for many people unless they prepare ahead of time for desert life, homeless drug addicts and the California invasion, that was our experience anyway - mileage may differ for others.

See my post below - they have no water, ports, railroads etc. like other parts of the country, not even up for discussion.
Within the context of this article, the description provided seems fair enough. It obviously refers to surface area (as in: square miles).
Of course, if you think that they might really mean "pre-tax revenues minus deferred depreciation per worker" or such, you are free to do a little investigating for yourself.
Track down leads, contact the author, rough up a few witnesses, go over the crime scene with a fine-toothed comb, etc.
Regards,
Yes, I like walking in desert at night but that’s about it.
When people complain of rain and storms here in western Arkansas/eastern Oklahoma I ask them if they’d rather live in a desert.
Hopefully they’re Leftugees who will help turn Nevada back to red.
Real snarky. But we’ll done snark.
Amen....... my initial thoght was how can they move if there are no jobs?
Apparently there are not only jobs but much better living conditions as well
When I left NYC twenty-one years ago, one of the requirements for where I would live was, "four seasons." I soon found out there are actually five. I'd not known of "Mud"...but I learned! 😄
the Reno area has seen 25,000 new residents according to reports
And that’s just the illegals
Spreading the Suck
I have lived in the American South West. And I greatly prefer living where it is green and where it rains. I live in a green state now.
Racists against new arrivals. Racists! Back off and permit trampling.
Right there are jobs in this vast new Nevada industrial park and the areas around it, where houses are being built for the workers.
What was Harry Reid’s cut? 10%?
