Students at Morgan State University returned from their holiday break to find new metal detectors at the dorms they had to pass through to enter.
The metal detectors have been placed in all on-campus dorms at Morgan. Students said they are torn on the topic.

The school has seen shootings both around and on campus, including an on-campus shooting during homecoming weekend in October 2021, an off-campus shooting at the Marble Hall Gardens housing complex in September 2022, and a third shooting off-campus at a gas station in Northwood Commons in December 2022.

In a statement, Morgan officials told 11 News, "maintaining the safety of Morgan's campus and our students is paramount, which is why we took the proactive measure to put in place safety screening devices in our student residential facilities at the beginning of this Spring term. The safety screening devices are a component of the University's overall comprehensive security plan. In all, 17 screening devices were installed leading up to the beginning of the Spring semester which began on January 18."
"The safety screening devices are there to assist the University in the detection of potential weapons as residents and visitors enter all on-campus residence halls. The walk-through process for the screening device is meant to be unobtrusive. With this new system in place, the University is actively assessing the operations and welcomes the feedback of our campus community as we are committed to maximizing the safety screening devices' efficiency and effectiveness," the statement said. "Our overriding goal is to increase the level, and sense, of security without inconveniencing the routine egress and ingress of our students or guests at on-campus residence halls."

You mean to tell me the "NO GUNS" sign and no-weapons policy doesn't work.
Metal detectors and airport style security to live in a college dorm? A sad trend of the times.
Ping.
Sad it came to this.
Morgan State University is a public historically black research university in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the largest of Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities. In 1867, the university, then known as the Centenary Biblical Institute, changed its name to Morgan College to honor Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its board of trustees and a land donor to the college. It became a university in 1975.

You can set the detectors to whatever sensitivity you want. I was a Correctional Sergeant who had to cover the yard every now and then, and inmates had to pass through a metal detector prior to being allowed into the yard. Our detector was set so high that it would detect a slice of gum wrapped in aluminum foil in their pants or jacket pocket.
A few years ago, a friend of mine was the only caucasian instructor there. Let’s just say it was interesting
In the early 70’s I was bused across town as part of a great social experiment.
Being a marshmallow in hot chocolate is....”interesting”.
Today you can replace "interesting" with "life threatening".
Today you are probably safer in a cage full of wild animals.
FTFY
We in the industry refer to that as a stick of gum.
Regards,
Thanks for jogging my old brain.
Students at Liberty University are allowed to have their concealed carry weapons in their dorm rooms. The campus police keeps their long guns in a safe at the office.
“When I was in college, all the dorms needed your ID to open the doors.”
Talk about making a guy feel old…I guess we lived on the edge back in the day by just walking in the door like we lived there.
To quote a line from “McClintock”, “It isn’t the times that are changing, Momma.”
My favorite “security” measure they had in place was after a certain time at night one of the RAs was assigned to a desk in the lobby. I would want you to flash your ID to them as you walked in. I just use the same piece of plastic on the card reader to open the door, what are you trying to accomplish year was always my thought. Of course, they never actually close. Looked at it, just as long as they saw it was the right color from about 20 feet away you were good.
There was one set of dorms that did not use the card readers, and that was the older apartment style buildings. It consisted of three four-story buildings with two interior stairwells each and apartments on either side of side stairwell 416 apartments in each building. I lived there for one semester and it was great. I didn’t even seem like it was part of a college campus as it wasn’t a slightly more secluded/wooded area. No one ever had any problems there with theft or damage, the fact that it was restricted to juniors and seniors, probably play the fact as well

This is insane. Who the heck doesn’t carry a knife at pretty much all times?
