In 1943, Soviet troops liberated the capital of Ukraine from the Nazis. Now in Kyiv they are demolishing a monument to General Nikolai Vatutin, who commanded these troops and liberated the city from Nazi invaders.
Oleksiy Goncharenko, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, wrote about the dismantling of the monument in his Telegram channel.
On the photo published by him, you can see the beginning of the demolition of the monument. Workers drove a truck crane and grabbed the monument with a cable to remove it from the pedestal.
The monument itself is located in the capital's Mariinsky park not far from the Ukrainian parliament. This work of the world-famous Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich was installed here in 1948.
But recently the Commission of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine recommended the city administration to dismantle it.

Have they started putting up Hitler statues yet, or are they waiting a bit longer?
The Soviets didn’t liberate anything. They just exchanged one oppression for another.

Where did they learn to remove statues that don't automatically match the present political narrative?
I did Nazi see this coming from the Banderites.
Today’s Russians aren’t Soviets.
It’s not an easy call. Gen. Vatutin should be respected for his efforts in pushing the Nazis out of Kiev. No sensible Ukrainian can argue that Kiev’s liberation was a bad thing. (And yes, I know some Ukrainians were Nazi sympathizers. I’m not talking about them.)
On the other hand, Russia and Ukraine are at war. In a way, it would be like Americans removing a statue of some British general during the War of 1812. Can’t say I’d blame them.
Russians, Muscovites, haven’t changed since Ivan the Terrible.
Bingo.
So then they won’t get upset that a Soviet statue is being torn down.
bttt
Don’t you have a secret meeting with local insurrectionists?
Zelensky just following the antifa playbook of taking down historic statues.
Ooh “insurrectionists”. You sound like Adam Schiff.
If they subsequently put up a monument to Field Marshal von Manstein, you’ll know...
Or General Vlasov.
Read some history about Ukraine between 1918 and 1941. The Communists were worse than the Nazis. No one should respect Vatutin.
> Zelensky just following the antifa playbook of taking down historic statues. <
It’s actually a bit different. Antifa took down statues that offended them for some long-ago historical reason. Ukraine and Russia are in a shooting war, right now.
Vatutin of course had nothing to do with this current war. But I sure don’t blame Ukraine for taking his statue down. Just as I wouldn’t blame Russia for removing a statue of some Ukrainian guy.
Or Ukrainians have good reason to hate the Soviets. Like the Poles, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, etc
Why not? I can respect Zhukov without respecting his boss.
I don’t care for the Soviets, but anyone who was in the business of killin’ Nahtzees couldn’t be all bad.
