Earthquake hits Indonesia, killing 4 as restaurant collapses

A shallow earthquake shook Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua on Thursday, killing four people who were unable to escape when a floating restaurant collapsed into the sea.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit residential areas in Jayapura, near Papua's northern coast and was centered at a depth of 22 kilometers (13 miles). Shallow quakes often cause more damage on the Earth's surface.

“The residents were really panicked. I was in a car, and I felt like the car's wheels were lifted up,” said Tri Asih, a resident of Jayapura, Papua's capital.

Officials said four people who were inside a floating restaurant died when the quake caused it to collapse into the sea.

Pray for us. Last night, in the space of 2.5 hours, we had over 10 earthquakes. This one happened about 1600. I live about 15 miles away and so just experienced a bit of rock and roll. But, a major mall in Jayapura was severely damaged. This section of stores was right on the edge of the waterfront. Many, many houses are on stilts hanging over the edge of mountain cliffs. This is a major event for the community here.

Only 4 people died? That is unfortunate, and hopefully the entire number. But, when you read about similar earthquakes in the middle east killing thousands, it's a big difference.

I am an expatriate, not a national. I would NEVER do that. No, the hubs and I agreed to take care of him until his owners returned from a home assignment in the US. But, they are not returning to this location. We already have a dog and the two dogs don’t always agree on things. The family we are sending Sparky to is a very loving family with a big yard and plenty of things to investigate. He is a pilot for Mission Aviation Fellowship and she has been serving here for over 30 years.

While locals eat dog meat, we protect our dogs from that activity.

Yes, thousands have died in Turkey, but our four are just as dead as the Turks are.

I was able to sleep all night so no shaking significant to roust me out of bed. The group chat of expat ladies here doesn’t report any more shakes.

I spoke too soon. 14 minutes ago we had another 4.3. This one was off-shore, not on land, and that makes a big difference. 23 miles away from me this time.
