Vladimir Putin has threatened a 'response' involving 'military-political consequences' if the UK supplies planes to Ukraine in the fight against Russian forces.
President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday made his first visit to Britain since the outbreak of the invasion last year, warning that the war could 'stagnate' if jets are not forthcoming from the West.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, speaking at a joint press conference, responded to his plea by admitting 'nothing is off the table' when pushed on providing aircraft before stressing that Britain will now start preparing the Ukrainian air force.
But Moscow has threatened a 'response' if the Government does supply planes, with some Nato states concerned about provoking a direct clash.
The Russian Embassy in London strongly warned the UK against supplying the warplanes, saying Britain would bear responsibility 'for another twist of escalation and the ensuing military-political consequences for the European continent and the entire world'.

Only if they think they will gain. They can't possibly think a strategic exchange is desirable, so what would they gain from using them against Ukraine? Any use in Ukraine is very likely to trigger a NATO conventional response that would definitely not be in Russia's interests. Nukes against a NATO power would get a comparable Russian site nuked and probably lead to a strategic exchange, so that's out as well.
The correct answer is that there was no real UK interest vital or otherwise east of the Rhine, The British stupidly started the second world war and deatroyed their empire so that Germany could be forever destroyed as a great power. Small, all states are valueless in most cases and certainly not worth fighting for over due to cowardly politicians hiding behind some meaningless abstraction such as ‘defending democracy’ or ‘stopping aggression ‘., or my particular favorite ‘protecting the rights of small nations’. Apparently geographic dwarfism bestows special rights on micro states.
As if Russian pilots receive anything comparable to Western training. In any case, the aircraft would be used to deliver standoff munitions with far greater range than what Ukraine has now.
You can't believe that flying in like a seagull and crapping Russian propaganda all over is actually effective, can you?

It is called a line in the sand. Russia has stated numerous times its war with the Ukraine is existential. That means we will go to any length to win. The logic may be flawed and silly but it is clearly stated. Theater nukes will prove the Russians really do mean business . Next up will be targeted nuclear destruction of some major city. (Lwow , that would get Poland’s attention as well) Not Kiev, the Russian nuke doctrine is to leave someone who can either surrender or negotiate an end game. Is there anything in the Ukraine to make any other country to be involved in a war now over the nuclear threshold. I would argue absolutely no. But politicians combine a remarkable capacity for cowardice, panic, and mindless risk taking.

Russia lies so outrageously and makes so many false boasts that no one can take the nuke talk seriously. I heard it many, many times when I was a kid and as a young man. It was all bullcrap then and it’s bullcrap now.
Who cares how well any of eastern Europe wogistan is doing? Are you willing to risk a real European war with nukes over the dick dancer and his profoundly screwed up country?
