In my non-academic online work, I have a Hispanic colleague whose first name is Stalin; I've never asked him about it since he's not a hardcord leftist, I just assume his parents were commies.

I was on a consulting gig about a dozen years ago, and there was a guy named Jihad. So this would have been around a decade after 9/11. I found it interesting.
I have argued that Russia exists on the periphery of Western Civilization, and that it is now and always has been an Oriental Despotism. My critics have named a half-dozen civilizing influences, but they only underscore the fact that their exceptions prove the rule.
