A water hose exhibits thrust whether the nozzle is above or below water.

You ever watch a boat pumping out massive amounts of water? Why isn't it floating away from the flow of the water?

When you take a piss, why don't you fall backwards? And would you if you could piss hard enough?

the air is not dense enough for a propeller to function.

Sigh ...

Nonsense. You design your prop for that environment. Airplanes can fly at that altitude. You know that. Therefore, airfoils work at that altitude. You know that. We have a bloody helicopter flying on bloody MARS! You know that too.

I don't know if the chinese did it, but it obviously can be done. The only questions are: blade shape, blade length, and rotational speed.

Lets say that I accept your extremely flawed premise.

How much thrust would be required to propel that 200 foot balloon with an alleged payload of over 2,000 pounds from a propeller that would be non functional at an altitude of 68,000 feet?

And if the propeller did work, as you surmise, where would the power source come from and how big would that propeller have to be in order to dig into an almost non-existant atmosphere in order to produce thrust?

And you do know that any combustible engine requires oxygen to fire the fuel source and at 68,000 feet no normal combustion engine could function due to the lack of oxygen.....You do know that don't you?

Propeller driven airplanes? Tell me which ones which weren't specially modified for the flight. We're talking about propeller driven, not jets. That's a topic for another discussion.....

Waiting for your reply

As a post script, you never explained why none of the propeller driven aircraft you posted were able to fly over 42,000 feet. Care to explain?

Yes I do, and why is that possible? Because the density of the air, which is less than 1% of the density of earth's, is greater than the 4 pound weight of the drone which allows it to lift off the ground.

Nice try.....

Airplanes with airfoil wings operate at >85,000 ft. That simple fact means that airfoils WORK at >85000 ft.

Do you understand that fact?

A propeller is an airfoil.

Do you understand that fact?

Meanwhile, we’re talking about a BALLOON. It generates lift regardless of its motion by being lighter than air.

Do you understand that fact?

Therefore any propellers hypothetically attached to a BALLOON do not have to generate lift. Nor do they have to move the BALLOON fast enough for its wings to generate lift, because it doesn’t even HAVE wings. It’s a BALLOON!!!

Do you understand that fact?

Instead, any propellers hypothetically attached to a BALLOON only have to generate enough thrust to push it around a little. And we know perfectly well that an airfoil can generate lift/thrust at >85,000 ft. Therefore a propeller can generate thrust at 68,000ft.

As I said above, the only questions relate to the size, shape, and rotational speed of the propeller.

I think you’re arguing for the sake of being argumentative. I’ve made my point. Several times.

You brought up the Martian drone, here is how it flies:

The thin Martian atmosphere requires the drone's blades to spin at about 2,400 revolutions per minute, which is six times faster than its earthbound twin. AeroVironment constructed the blades with a Styrofoam-like material coated with carbon fiber.

That debunks your argument....

As I said above, the only questions relate to the size, shape, and rotational speed of the propeller.

Well come on then, tell me the size, and the rotational speed of the propeller that could possibly function in that low density atmosphere.

All you're doing is hypothesizing without offering any facts.

Then depending on the massive size of the propeller required to meet your demands, where is that power source going to come from that would enable it to be controlled for the alleged 8 days it was aloft and for how long after if it wouldn't have been shot down?

Maybe we should collect one of their balloons (or make one of our own), reprogram it and see if we could station it permanently over one of China’s “remote and heavily militarized island.” Then complain indignantly if they do anything about it. “It was only monitoring ocean pollution and global warming!”

Dunno why you choose to be an orifice, but you are a liar as well.

I never said a thing about propellers working at any altitude.

Whatever your issue, go hump someone else’s leg

OK, Einstein; what’s that balloon floating on then? It had a payload that weighed more than a ton..... what was the balloon filled with that is lighter than.............nothing?
