It reportedly had solar panels among its array of equipment. So likely some sort of electrical powered limited propulsion.

There’s a simple solution, but loose lips sink ships.

Not so sure about that...the Chinese know they had done so easily in the past and may be kicking themselves now for not trying something nasty sooner. Americans will be watching for them now and the political pressure is such that the Balloons will be shot down and not tolerated above American soil. American Patriots will be looking for them(even if some legitimate studies are being done by domestic universities or NASA) and will report them and also onto social media.
At first they were saying 40,000 ft. Later, it seemed to get higher as the week went on.
Does anyone know whay the characters(chinese I assume)on the ballon translate to in english?
The payload was plenty big enough to carry lots of fuel - it was the size of a medium jet liner.
It was supposed to have small props to maneuver, possibility battery driven.
We will know more later as the Navy has said it will release some details.

At 68,000 feet, the air is not dense enough for the propellers to provide thrust.
There is a ceiling at which propeller driven air craft can fly. That's why you never hear of high mountain rescues with helicopters, especially on Mt. Everest, which at its peak is only 29,000 feet.
Airship. Lol writer is an idiot. Why not call it a zeppelin? Moron.
Why the hell could it not have a solar aray and electric powered propellers? Boats do it. A balloon doesn’t require enough motion to keep it aloft, a small prop would be very effective at that altitude. Could be carrying gas cylinders that are operated electrically to create jet propulsion. Doesn’t need a blast of energy, just a nudge. Think of a bow thruster on a sail boat.
Absolutely not, for the reason I previously posted. Some propeller aircraft can fly as high as 12,500 ft (3810 m) but they rarely cruise at this altitude. In general, propeller aircraft do not have the thrust to fly above certain altitudes due to less air
Also, don't forget, the balloon was allegedly 200 feet high with an alleged pay load of 2000 pounds.
The higher the altitude, the less air and at 68,000 feet, any propellers would be useless.
Think of a bow thruster without water.........It's as useful as a propeller without air.
About propellers - just mentioning what I read on another threads.
And I said, it was supposed to, not that it actually had - and no one will know the truth unless the Navy reveals how it maneuvered.
The Russians got a free show from it.
Is it possible for a base to be secret when everyone knows where out is?
