Gonzalez, who became the center of an international custody battle at 5 years old, was nominated Sunday to Cuba's National Assembly.
Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban national whose precarious boyhood arrival in the U.S. in 1999 prompted a fierce international custody battle, is set to become a lawmaker. Gonzalez was nominated by his local municipal assembly on Sunday to serve in Cuba's National Assembly...
Gonzlaez was en route to Florida with his mother when their boat capsized on Thanksgiving 1999 and she and other migrants drowned. The boy's fate thereafter became a flashpoint in U.S.-Cuba relations.
His father, a waiter named Juan Miguel who had remained in Cuba, famously fought for his son's return. Distant relatives in Miami, however launched a legal battle to keep the boy in the U.S.--and feared Gonzalez would become a political pawn of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
U.S. immigration officials eventually decided to place Gonzalez in the custody of his father, which the boy's family refused to accept. A nighttime raid in April 2000 saw federal agents storm the house where Gonzalez was staying, spurring protests and counter-demonstrations.
Gonzalez was flown home to Cuba after the Supreme Court rejected the effort to keep him in the U.S. The island nation celebrated the return of Gonzalez, who later said the government bodyguards ordered to protect him had become some of his closest friends.
Castro himself was a guest of honor at Gonzalez's seventh birthday back home. In 2013, Gonzalez told state-run media that the Cuban leader was "like a ship that knew to take his crew on the right path". He would later profess that Castro had become a father figure for him, and held back tears when the bearded authoritarian died in 2016...

And local officials and state like then Governor Jeb Bush were limp.
Fidel took young Elian under his wing so to speak and so here he is going into the rubber stamp legislature.
Can carlos(er) santana get a t-shirt with elian sporting a chez style beret? Good little commie now?
Not a good Commie, if you get my drift.
So, Elian is a full fledged POS now.
Poor kid.
“Poor kid.”
I agree. He was used as a political ping pong ball.
(Aunt voice) “You’ve grown up so fast look at you! You’ll be executing dissidents in no time!”
I remember when they filled him up with Miltown to get him back to Cuba.
Disgusting.
Now Elian is on the other side of the picture so to speak.
“Compliments of Slick Willy.”
And that horrid Janet Reno.
“Bearded Authoritarian” LOL. They try to soften the murdering bazturd. It’s like saying Jeffrey Dahmer had peculiar eating habits.
My brother-in-law was part of his protection detail while he was a guest in this country. He said he got paid good money to watch a kid play with a dog.
We canât continue to coexist with these monsters.
â âI donât profess to have any religion,â the younger GonzĂĄlez told state-run media in 2013, according to CNN, âbut if I did my God would be Fidel Castro.â
He doesnât aim very high
WHY does anyone read Huffington Post or Mother Jones or Daily Kos?? They are Communist publications.
One of the most disgusting events of the Clinton Administration. A violation of the “Feet Dry” rule for Cubans. Also, he is still considered an “Elegua”, a holy child, rescued by the dolphins from the sharks after his mother and others died at sea. We will hear about him again
I bet Elian has “fond” memories of USA and El Gringo what with the combat clad screaming tuff in face mask holding a big gun in faces of Elian and his Padre hiding in the closet. Real sweet backdrop for years of trauma counseling.
