Bill Gates on why he’ll carry on using private jets and campaigning on climate change

Bill Gates does not agree that using a private jet and campaigning on the issue of climate change represents a contradiction open to allegations of hypocrisy.

During a wide-ranging interview with the BBC aired at the end of last week, Gates was asked for his view on the charge that a climate change campaigner using a private jet to travel around the world was a hypocrite.

“Well, I buy the gold standard of, funding Climeworks, to do direct air capture that far exceeds my family’s carbon footprint,” the Microsoft co-founder, being interviewed in Kenya, replied.

“And I spend billions of dollars on ... climate innovation. So, you know, should I stay at home and not come to Kenya and learn about farming and malaria?”

The billionaire added that he was “comfortable with the idea that, not only am I not part of the problem by paying for the offsets, but also through the billions that my Breakthrough Energy Group is spending, that I’m part of the solution.”

During his interview with the BBC, Gates also spoke about the role developed nations needed to play when it came to reducing emissions.

“What the rich countries owe to the entire world is that they need to get their emissions down to zero as fast as they can,” he said. “But that’s not enough because they, you know, they have so … much in the way of resources.”

“They also need to invent new approaches so that the cost of being green, the cost of not having emissions in all areas, gets down to be zero.”

“So a new way of making cement or steel, you know, electric passenger cars, that’s all in the rich countries.”

“And they’ve got to solve it so they can turn to the middle-income countries and say…

In my own way, so tiny compared to Gates, I’m going to do half of what Gates is doing, and go against half of what Gates is doing.

I’m going to use whatever energy I want however I please but I’m not going to push climate hysteria or do silly things to try to “stop” it.

Take that, Billy Boy,

If Climeworks takes the CO2 out of the air, what do the plants near the Climeworks Chuggers look like?

Plants need CO2, so if it works, it must be a barren wasteland . . .

Climeworks

Maybe it's just Unicorn Farts?

Question to Mr. Gates:

Can you show me how you paying for your “carbon footprint” has had any effect on “global climate change?”

Didn’t think so. STFU you rich bastard . . .

according to a wiki article, Climeworks would need to build 250,000 units to achieve a 1% atmospheric carbon reduction (if current levels remain static). The carbon produced requires underground storage and although some is sold to ‘a’ greenhouse for $1K/ton. The industry would require “long-term government investment in incentives.”

what isn’t said is the carbon cost of building and staffing 250K units, the creating of underground storage facilities and the cost of maintaining an army of lobbyists to lobby governments to make long term “investments” in a private commerical enterprise.

Sounds like a feel-good business created to provide jobs to the kids of rich parents paid for by the government.

Hey, Bill Gates! I agree with you on the “over population problem. Let’s remove from the planet those with the largest “carbon footprint” first, and then we’ll work our way down the list. You have my vote.

We all need to work together to save the planet, right Billy?

All CO2 is not equal.

The where and when of CO2 emission matters.

Making Detroit two degrees warmer in January would be a blessing.

Making the Arctic two degrees warmer in late August might be a problem.

His jet’s CO2 may stay in the air for 800 years.

The CO2 he is paying to extract might get 90% naturally absorbed within 90 days anyway.

“Well, I buy the gold standard of, funding Climeworks, to do direct air capture that far exceeds my family’s carbon footprint . . .”

In other words, I have purchased enough environmental indulgences to keep me out of climate purgatory for a thousand years. Therefore, I can pollute all I want now.

Good point. The Climate Change™ industry is the modern day version of Johann Tetzel. Indulgences.

It’s called selling indulgences, a monetary payment of penalty which, supposedly, absolved one of past sins and/or released one from purgatory after death.

The truth is, Climeworks is responsible for more indirect CO2 emissions than it captures. It's easy to tell by the cost. Bill Gates's thinking is half-baked and buggy, like his software. But that is no accident, it's the secret ingredient to selling endless upgrades. Bill Gates has a nose for exploiting stupid people, making him a natural Demonrat.
