In the 20th century, “White flight” transformed many American cities as White people moved in droves from urban centers to the suburbs.
In the last decade, that exodus kicked into reverse.
The White population increased between 2010 and 2020 in hundreds of neighborhoods at the center of many large cities, even as it declined almost everywhere else in the country. This influx, which in some cases began before 2010 but has accelerated and expanded, has brought about new upheavals, making some of the country’s biggest urban cores feel increasingly unrecognizable to longtime Black, Hispanic and Asian residents.
Some remember when they or their families were forced to live in certain inner-city neighborhoods, restricted by economics or racial covenants from moving to the leafy suburbs. Now many wonder how much integration is really happening between old and new neighbors — and whether there is still room for them in the neighborhoods they call home.

Some families of color have left of their own accord, opting for larger houses and more open space as suburban America has become more accessible to people of diverse backgrounds. Others have been squeezed out by skyrocketing rents or homeowner fees.
“You have minorities who are looking for more affordable housing, so they’re moving out to the suburbs,” said Derek Hyra, a professor of urban policy at American University.
Experts offered various explanations for the return of White residents to urban cores.
“Some of this is probably disillusionment with the suburban dream, a generation that grew up in the suburbs … wanting to get away, a revalorization of city life,” said Philip Kasinitz, a professor of sociology at CUNY Graduate Center. A decline in crime starting in the early 1990s also probably played a part, he said.

Those were mostly millenials. I used to be amazed at how anybody could actually want to live in a cramped little apartment in what was basically a concrete box in the a high rise building. They crowed about being able to walk to work and bars and restaurants being nearby.
I think that whole vibe is dead and a large chunk of even millenials would rather work remotely than go trudge off to a cube farm every day. Big cities are in big trouble.
I’m sure the full impact simply hasn’t been felt yet in Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, and New York.

The ill-mannered students within them are very upset that despite their vigorous efforts they mattered little in your decision making.
The school buildings were often good enough to be used to make lots of Jewish doctors, business people and lawyers.
That was actually happening them.
Then something or other happened in 2020, and it's not happening anymore.
That was sort of cryptic.
I have heard this same story in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s through to last year. I do not believe it.
Next year will be “Exodus of talented young people from promising urban centers. Lofts and condos going at a discount.”
It’s better for companies, too. If you have a workforce that works well remotely, why have a building you have to pay for, insure, furnish, heat, cool and power just so your workers can get together to joke and gossip and do the same work they would have been doing remotely anyway, and without the commute?

The skyline in my community now consists exclusively of grain silos. Most of my new friends are Mennonites.
I suggest that all violent and destructive people move to cities and all peaceful and constructive people move to suburban and rural areas.

Yeah...never understood that myself. Pay $6-700K for a 1200SF house, built in the ‘50, with teeny-tiny closets, sitting on a postage stamp sized lot in a upscale renovated neighborhood. I couldn’t live in a Cracker Jack box like that. But these folks move in and they raise their noses up into the air.
All the reasons blacks move, either out of the city (cost of living) or to back to the city (more ethnic) is reasonable and understandable.
In other words, whites always suck.
