A son and mother found shot to death on their Lowcountry property.
News of the deaths of Paul Murdaugh, 22, and Maggie Murdaugh, 52, has led to national headlines.
Not only for the mystery surrounding their murders but for the ties to other death investigations in the area: Stephen Smith in 2015, Gloria Satterfield in 2018 and Mallory Beach in 2019.
1920-2005: For three generations, members of the Murdaugh family serve as the South Carolina 14th circuit solicitor, the top prosecutor representing Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Allendale and Colleton counties.
July 8, 2015: Stephen Smith, 19, is found dead on Sandy Run Road in Hampton County. No arrest is made.
Feb. 2, 2018: Gloria Satterfield, 57, falls at the Murdaugh home.
For more than two decades, she had served as the family housekeeper and nanny.
Feb. 26, 2018: Satterfield dies. Alex Murdaugh tells Satterfield's sons that he was responsible and plans to sue himself so they are financially taken care of.
The family says they never receive any money.
Feb. 24, 2019: Mallory Beach, 19, goes missing after a boat crash near Parris Island. A 911 call is placed from the scene of the crash.
March 3, 2019: Following a week of searches, a boater discovers Mallory's body in a marsh area.
March 2019: The Beach family files a wrongful death lawsuit against a Beaufort bar, convenience store and two homeowners all of whom served Beach and her friends alcohol the night of the crash.
The lawsuit was later amended to only name "Alex" Murdaugh Sr., “Buster" Murdaugh Jr., and Parker's convenience store.
April 18, 2019: Paul Murdaugh is indicted on charges of boating under the influence causing death and two counts of boating under the influence causing bodily injury.
May 6, 2019: Murdaugh pleads not guilty.

Feb. 2, 2023: Much of the testimony takes place without the jury present as the judge determines whether to allow in-depth discussion of Murdaugh's alleged financial crimes to be used in the murder trial.
The trial is being broadcast on Court TV every day.
I have yet to figure out why this murder trial is worthy of national attention.......................
Seriously. A local WBT radio talk show guy is completely absorbed by this garbage and talks relentlessly about it. Then, you get the callers that offer scenarios that involve everybody from the Clintons to space aliens. Gagghh! “DUDE! Please go back to discussing how rotten the Left is.”
People are interested in serial killers, generally. Plus this guy was a politically visible Democrat, so there’s a public interest angle from that as well.
“MURDAUGH Murders”
I wonder if this clown knew that there is a legal process to get one’s name changed.

Murdaugh contributed the maximum amount
to Biden’s 2020 campaign.
I think several of reasons
1. Being accused of murdering your wife and son is certainly a sensational story (although in the worst of ways).
2. This is a famous/infamous family that has held sway over Colleton County for generations.
3. This guy was a lawyer himself who’s life was in a death spiral at the same time of the murders. Owing millions to banks and others leading to disbarment as a lawyer and removed from his law firm.
4. People just seem to get dead around this family. e.g. housekeeper Gloria Satterfield and oldest son Busters friend Stephen Smith.
Both of which died under suspicious circumstances.
This mess is like a train wreck, it’s ugly but many can’t quit watching.
I told my wife last week that if this guy is found guilty I have no doubt he will attempt suicide at some point......I just got a feeling.
.
Appreciate it 👍
Huge contributor to S.C. Dems as well.
The murders only make sense if Murdaugh was in a fit of drug induced madness. His whole world was collapsing. I think it was a murder-suicide thing and he chickened out.
It’s strange that investigators haven’t found the weapon or clothes he wore. So far, I don’t think its a slam dunk case.
Why the national coverage? It’s unusual for a wealthy, upper class white man to kill his family. It’s a curious affair.
Agree with all that......also just an fyi, 2 weapons were used.....12 gage killed the son and a 300 blackout killed the wife.
Also weird is one of the sons had a 300 blackout of the same type used on the wife stolen at some point in the past.
There is very little normal about this case.
These evil people are old money rats who run the area. His lawyer was at Biden’s “Winter Holiday” party. The fact that they are Democrats is pretty much buried.

Exactly right. If Murdaugh had been a big Trump supporter, that would headline many of the articles.
Mudaugh’s best excuse is that the family had a lot of enemies. If I was the defense attorney, I’d line up all the people who had a motive to kill them starting with the family of the girl the son killed in the boating incident. Then there’s the dead housekeepers family. And God knows who else he cheated.
As for the missing weapons, I live close to where the murders took place. There are countless bodies of water to toss the guns in. Not to mention acres and acres of empty land to bury them. SC is quite empty when you go just a few miles out of town.
With any luck, he will succeed. I am pulling for him to be successful.
