A New York State Police trooper was arrested and charged with issuing over two dozen fake traffic tickets to unsuspecting motorists in 2021 and 2022.
Edward Longo, 34, issued 32 tickets and supporting depositions containing false statements and false information without performing traffic stops or observing traffic violations on eight different occasions between May 10, 2021, and October 2, 2022, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors allege that Longo never actually conducted a stop or witnessed a traffic violation. One of the people Longo is accused of falsely ticketing had died prior to their supposed interaction, officials said.
The bogus tickets and fake depositions were then submitted to the New York State Police Troop K Hawthorne barracks in Mount Pleasant, where Longo was assigned, authorities said. Longo regularly patrolled the Sprain Brook and Taconic State Parkways in Westchester County.
“When State Police learned of a possible falsified traffic ticket scheme by one of our members, we immediately launched a criminal investigation in collaboration with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office that resulted in the charges filed,” state police said in a press release.
The former state trooper was allegedly motivated to falsify his records because his troop, New York State Troop K, monitors how many traffic tickets officers issue for performance-related goals. Troopers who do not meet expectations or whose productivity falls below their peers “may be counseled,” charging documents state.

There was a NY State Trooper in my neighborhood who would use his badge to confiscate fireworks. On July 4th he would have a huge fireworks display.

30 a month, THIRTY TICKETS A MONTH is the min, and he couldn’t make that?

I’m sure this is a common problem.
You assume anyone is matching up stops with tickets.
This is a terrible violation of the public trust. His boss should be fired for lack of oversight.
This is why I’m installing a traffic camera with a speedometer readout. Tired of this crap.

The headline is a lie. These were not “fake tickets”. They were real tickets which this police officer issued to real defendants. However, the officer had not witnessed any crime. He was just filling his quota of tickets.

Being a NYer for decades, born and raised, every NYS Trooper I ever knew or met was a jerkwad of testosterone and horse sh!t, including my father. I’m pretty sure that’s mandatory for hiring.
Pulling people over is both dangerous and stressful. Some just aren’t cut out for it.

How else was he suppose to dispose of them properly.
He probably prevented tons of carbon from being released into the air by faking the tickets; besides, isn’t this kinds like the fake vaccine/clot shots fostered upon us.
As long as there’s a strong productivity bonus or linkage with promotions/salary increases for issuing tickets, police will have an incentive to write bogus tickets. Coupled with limited transparency and community oversight of police affairs, this problem is likely fairly commmon.
