Senators reject fighter upgrades for Turkey should it block Sweden, Finland NATO bids
Just The News ^ | 2/3/2023 | Ben Welden

A bipartisan group of senators are calling on President Joe Biden to impress upon Turkey that Congress would not approve upgrades to Ankara's air fleet should the country refuse to allow Sweden and Finland into NATO.

Sweden and Finland filed to join the alliance in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year. The U.S. overwhelmingly approved their entry, with Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley standing alone as the sole Senate vote against their admission.

In order to join NATO, all 30 members must accept their entry. Turkey and Hungary remain the only members of the bloc that have not yet done so. Ankara initially raised objections to their entry over security concerns and remains hesitant to grant its assent despite efforts by Helsinki, Stockholm and the rest of NATO to assuage Turkish fears.

Yeah, I know I’ve been there.

The Mediterranean coastal area has some nice European style areas.

Sounds like blackmail.

That said, I don’t know why the US or Turkey are in NATO.

No updates for your planes Turkey—if you don’t follow our rules and bend to America’s way of thinking. Who do you think you are? You can’t exist without Biden and the all powerful Democratic World Government. See what happened with Russia! The are losing big in Ukraine. “Our NATO expansion is going to cause the death of us all.”

>>>>>>>>>

No, it is RUSSIA which is expanding. Nato only tries to fend off traditional Russan imperialism and its policy of annexing by force sovereign nations.

And to make it even worse... Russia isn’t attacking Ukraine alone!
It’s a whole islamo-neo-soviet AXIS teaming up against Ukraine! It is composed as follows : Russia, Belarus, Chechnya-region, IRAN, North Korea and the entire CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) which is Russias NATO equivalent.

You don’t want Ukraine our ally to fight all that massive force all alone do you ?
Some help is a moral thing to do in order to protect Ukraine and prevent Russia to further invade the rest of Europe.

Americas economy would collapse if Europe would lose to Russia’s expansionism. Europe is Americas first customer.

Turkey will eventually be our enemy.

Let me ask, do you think the US tried to overthrow Erdogan in 2016?

I don’t like Russian aggression but Ukraine is not a US or NATO ally as far as I know.

Are there any Senate ratified treaties in effect making Ukraine a US ally?

NATO exists to protect against Russia, Ukraine is doing wonders in reducing that threat and NATO is giving them gear to help in that effort.

“Are there any Senate ratified treaties in effect making Ukraine a US ally?”

>>>>>>>>>

Absolutely there are :

1)
Since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine, the United States has provided Ukraine with billions in reform and military assistance and loan guarantees. If Ukraine had been an enemy, America wouldn’t have done that...

2)
There are indeed U.S. troops in western Ukraine training their Ukrainian colleagues there since 2015. Again, would we do that if Ukraine wasn’t an ally?

3)
In the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, the United States, Russia, and Britain committed “to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine” and “to refrain from the threat or use of force” against the country. Those assurances played a key role in persuading the Ukrainian government in Kyiv to give up what amounted to the world’s third largest nuclear arsenal, consisting of some 1,900 strategic nuclear warheads.

Ukraine indeed got rid of all that nuclear arsenal, America had pushed hard for that! But in return, America SIGNED an agreement assuring Ukraine for the protection of its sovereignty (as already said above).

No, Reagan broke up the USSR, but Russia is still there, still threatening and taking over European countries and threatening the world and NATO is still doing its job.

It should have been disbanded in 1991, with simple mutual defense treaties signed between US, Germany and UK.

Agreed. We didn't need NATO in 1991. But Vladimir Putin will use a different argument. Instead of NATO, he'll accuse Ukraine of trying to join the EU and he would do the same thing today.

Re: Your response to my question:

“Are there any Senate ratified treaties in effect making Ukraine a US ally?”

Points 1 & 2 are non-responsive to my question, an ally is a legal status, established by treaty, the law of the land once negotiated, signed and ratified.

Point 3 is incorrect.

The Budapest Memorandum was not submitted to the US Senate for ratification and is a security “assurance”, committing the parties to consultation in the event of disputes or violations of its terms, NOT a security “guarantee”.

Despite longstanding usurpation by presidents of the treaty power by presidents of both parties, treaties are made with the “advice and consent of the Senate”, not by the Executive acting alone.

I wish them well, but Ukraine is NOT an ally.

Your are wrong.

There are many things America can do without necessarily the Senate’s approval.
Have you heard about Americas 3 branches of power?

The American Government (the executive branch) HAS indeed the right to sign Memorandum agreements and give assurances on certain levels.

Did you know the White House can start a war attacking any nation its wants to without congress or Senates approval?
