"The senior military official who spoke to reporters Saturday said, "The debris is in 47 feet of water, primarily -- the recovery, that will make it fairly easy".

Damn those NE winds nearly pushed it all the way back to shore.

I suspect we did not even know that the balloon was there until it was over Montana. Otherwise why would we not shoot it down over Alaska?

A very large payload with enormous satellite-style solar panel "wings" would have a huge radar cross-section, and a significant visual signature. The thing was probably visible for 100+ miles to aircraft above the clouds (most flights at those latitudes) and visible on early-warning radar for probably a couple thousand. Heck, it probably showed up as an anomaly on civilian radar satellites (Sentinel-1 etc). It wasn't subtle. I can almost guarantee we knew about it.

The heartburn-inducing part of your statement is the final question- why wouldn't we shoot it down [before it performed its mission over the US / it didn't necessarily come in over Alaska- probably came in over B.C. and Alberta]. The very painful answer to that is- have you noticed who the commander-in-chief of the military has been since January 20th, 2021..?

Yes, in a sane world we'd have shot the damn thing down over the Pacific and probably never said a thing.

We haven't lived in a sane world for awhile now...

“No one was hurt”

FU!!

We we’re all hurt now and into the future as China uses the sensor data to map our vulnerabilities.

Rest assured that whatever data was collected was transmitted directly to the CCP. Any data storage on board will be encrypted and impossible for us to decipher. All they will get in their recovery efforts is worthless metal and plastic.

You nailed it.

The excuse not to shoot it down over land because it might hurt or kill somebody was total BS which played into the emotions of the touchy-feely sheep. It sure gave the Chinese time to accomplish their mission.

“They blew the balloon up and want to study it. That’s hilarious”

Wrong! The missile didn’t blow anything up. It deflated the balloon.

The problem is the damage to the equipment from the fall.

Is it possible our people jammed transmission back to China?

Or did they allow transmission because they are compromised?

First it puts a lie to the idea our military could not shoot it down over Montana, second rather that shoot it down over land where recovery would be easier they waited until it was over salt water which will on its own destroy any electrical connection that may remain.

It is almost as if they did not want to recover the balloon and it’s payload.

THE CORRECT RESPONSE IS FOR bidet TO SEND A FOUR STAR GENERAL TO MEET WITH PRESIDENT XI.

I presume the 4-Star General that last week warned about war with China by 2025 would fit the bill.
