Somebody has gotta get after the Rancher on this side of the valley to fix his fences along the highways.
Second cow I know of got plastered last night on highway 68.
Guy at the outpost said that there have been at least four hit since Dec 1.
The fences are in real bad shape. I guess I will have to call the BLM and let them know. I hate to do that but..
Well you know what the Az law is right? The cows have right of way even if they get through a fence. The Rancher is not obligated to keep them fenced. They only do it to prevent too many losses. Legally if you hit one no matter where it is you have to pay the Rancher for that Cow if he chooses to charge you for it. And Cow laws are also why all the “undeveloped” back roads are universal as a 45 mile an hour zone. These laws go all the way back to Open Range laws. All the rancher has to do is make sure a “Cow” sign is up.
What will happen is he will end up in federal court defending the open range law that was put in back in the 1800s.
Sad thing is, he could at least make an attempt to prevent problems like that.
I dont have a problem with open range along outlying areas away from main highways. I DO have a problem where the speed is 65 and fences are in such poor conditions that cattle wander out into a major highway and get killed and could kill drivers and their children for no other reason other than he is irresponsible.
Funny thing, they dont seem to have any trouble like this up around Flagstaff etc.

Been done, many times. It has been settled. As long as the cow signs have been posted and are up drivers have been notified. It is just like posting No Trespassing signs.
When I first moved there I dug into it concerning my property in the middle of a different Rancher’s range. I could not legally do anything about his cattle rubbing on my house and cars in my yard. My only legal option was to fence them out.
So one day three of his riders came up on horseback and started shooting at my Dog in the yard with me there. I grabbed my Rifle and came back out telling them to stop. They did but cursed me out claiming they could legally shoot any Dog they liked because of the Range laws. Even in a fence on private property.
So I chased it down, and at that time, may still be, it was indeed legal for them to do that if they like. Even without any proof the Dog did anything to the Cattle. I went to talk to the Rancher. Turns out he knew and remembered my Grandmother who also owned a Ranch back when.
I told him I would take full responsibility for my dog’s actions as long as the Cattle stayed outside my fenced property and my Dog stayed in. He told his boys to leave me alone and only do something if they actually saw my Dog physically after Cattle. My neighbors thanked me because some of them had already had their dogs shot.
And honestly? I support these rural laws. I am sick of the City encroaching on the country with their laws and ideology. If they don’t like it then too bad, don’t come live there. Stay in the City.
The Cattle were there first long before that valley was built up. I actually saw it before all the city folks moved in.
I just got off the phone with my cousin from the south east of the state.
He used to work a range down there and had the same problem. BUT, said that it is the responsibility of the BLM/County/State along a major highway if they want them fenced.
They worked with the officials to prevent things like that happening and had virtually very little problems. That meant get out and helping the officials crews to fix fences and make sure these types of things did not happen because they could see all hell breaking out if they did not make the attempt to head of the problem.
He actually has heard of the problems up here and mentioned that the rancher most likely is on his last legs and those cows are worth more dead than alive to him.
As to your last comment? Then maybe you all should have not allowed the buildup of this valley and that maybe the ones who developed this land are more responsible for this conundrum than those who bought these lots and built on them.
As I said..I being a farm boy as well as woodsman, I dont mind having these cattle roam around out here. Its the GD donkeys that are more problems. But I will tell you this. If these clowns dont attempt to try and head off this, these “CITY” folks will get the support to change these laws and then it will not go well for the Ranchers.
I got just around my house fenced as it is my responsibility to FENCE THEM OUT. The rest those dried beef on the hoof can keep the weeds and grass down for me.

FYI: The warhead on the US Sidewinder missile did NOT detonate when it impacted the Chinese War Balloon. It could be because the target was too soft to cause the missile’s impact fuse to work, and maybe its proximity fuse could not “see” the thin floating balloon enough, that it was unable to reflect enough of a signal to “read” its proximity. But more likely? I believe the US Air Force removed the explosive warhead from the missile, so they were basically firing a supersonic dart at the balloon, so as to take no chances of damaging the technological apparatus it was carrying!
