They would have caught this but apparently these balloons travel at Mach II and they slipped into our airspace without anyone noticing before it was too late.

Exactly! Looks like after over passing the Aleutian Islands it crossed over mainland near Nome and flew near Fairbanks before turning South south east and making a beeline for Montana. Over flying Yukon, British Columbia, and possibly Alberta Provenances.
If the John Q Public cellphone videos are any evidence, someone at least in our hemisphere is curious.
