Mike Gibbons bankrolled his U.S. Senate campaign. Now he’s spending to punish Republicans who worked with Dems to choose Ohio’s new House Speaker

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cleveland businessman Mike Gibbons spent millions of his own fortune last year funding an ultimately unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate last year.

Now he has a new political project.

Gibbons is planning to focus on trying to help defeat new Republican House Speaker Jason Stephens when he runs for reelection next year as well as the 21 Republican Ohio state representatives who teamed up with Democrats to elect Stephens.

The attention from Gibbons, who was one of the state’s larger Republican political contributors before he decided to run for office himself, is just the latest example of lingering discontent within the GOP after Stephens blocked a more conservative rival, state Rep. Derek Merrin, from taking the speaker’s gavel earlier this month.

A spokesperson told cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer that effort will involve Gibbons re-launching his political action committee, Ohio Strong Action. Gibbons previously used the PAC to seed what turned out to be a run for Senate last year and to raise money for Republican candidates who supported then-President Donald Trump during the 2020 campaign cycle.

Gibbons’ PAC now will focus on recruiting and supporting opponents for the pro-Stephens Republicans, as well as promoting a few core policy areas. That includes “defending the state constitution” – a reference to an effort to raising the voter approval threshold for state constitutional amendments in the face of a brewing abortion-rights ballot measure.

Other issues the PAC will focus on include promoting parent choice in education, opposing abortion and defending women’s sports, a reference to legislation that bars transgender’s athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports.

Sounds like he’s looking for an excuse to spend his money.

This is a good thing. Every last one of those RINOcrats need to be run out of office on a rail.

Turn about is fair play.

It was fine and dandy for Mitch the Turtle to withhold RNC money from MAGA candidates while propping Murkowski in Alaska.

I hope the RINOs get defeated in 24.
