Defense Department successfully test fires hypersonic missile

The Defense Department has announced the successful launch of a hypersonic missile – as part of an effort to advance U.S. military capabilities amid threats from China and Russia.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency said earlier this week that defense technology producer Lockheed Martin's version of the U.S. Air Force Hypersonic Airbreathing Weapon Concept "capped a program that accomplished all of its initial objectives."

"This month’s flight added an exclamation point to the most successful hypersonic air-breathing flight test program in US history," Air Force Deputy Walter Price said. "The things we’ve learned from [the Hypersonic Airbreathing Weapon Concept] will certainly enhance future U.S. Air Force capabilities."

The agency plans on analyzing data from the test, in which the missile flew higher than 600,000 feet and farther than 300 miles.

China and Russia each have claimed to have successfully launched hypersonic missiles in 2021, which was followed by Space Force Gen. David Thompson acknowledging the United States was behind in hypersonic capabilities.

Last year, Russia claimed to have even deployed a hypersonic missile against Ukraine, but defense experts are skeptical about the missile's success.

I believe we are much further ahead of the curve than the AF has let on.

Why boast about what you can do…until you have to do it? And…I am confident that ours will work, consistently.

A Google check said these things can go up to 3800 MPH. IMO that’s too fast to target a moving object. Considering its going about a mile per second I cannot see how it can change course fast enough for a moving target with a radically changing course.

But for a slow target such as an aircraft carrier, maybe they are toast.

I thought they had nuclear laser beams that made anti-ballistic missile missiles obsolete? 🤡

the Hypersonic Airbreathing Weapon Concept... the missile flew higher than 600,000 feet and farther than 300 miles.

Not much air to breath at 600,000 ft...

The US always HAS to be “behind” the technologically superior and innovative Russians/Chinese. /sarc

It’s the tried and proven way to get all the funding they want for their toys.

I agree - they will only claim success when it’s absolutely unavoidable, meaning it’s pretty close to production status - vs. the commie potemkin village weapons programs.

I think they added a zero. 60,000 feet I’d buy but 600,000 is halfway to the space station and 50 miles above the atmosphere.

I think so too, but I’m open to the possibility that it’s nothing more than a ballistic missile with an air breathing booster stage.

Joey Bidet&Co like to play catch-up. DJT would have been out ahead on this.

Last I read on the testing had trouble with the missiles melting because of the heat from traveling so fast.
That was awhile ago though, didn’t say how far this one traveled ,had to create more test area because it goes so fast would go out of present test area
