The House of Representatives is expected Wednesday to pass legislation requiring hundreds of thousands of federal workers to return to federal offices and shutter many of the telework arrangements permitted amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the measure is unlikely to be passed into law, the proposal raises new debate over whether telework by public employees is squandering taxpayer money or is preventing a shortfall of the civil servants needed to operate the sweeping U.S. government.
Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said services at the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans are suffering, and backlogs of claims are worsening....

Hey--if they can't get the workers "needed to operate the sweeping U.S. government" maybe its time to SHRINK the "sweeping U.S. government". Duh.
The shamdemic is over. There is no longer a need to continue to work from home. Get in your cars, pay the high gas prices you voted for, and go back to your office.
And if you choose not to, then you can either look for another job or retire. That will cut the budget.
Let’s see how many slackers quit.
The House does not "pass legislation".
The Senate will save the Federal Employees from such a fate then remind them of that election time
Golf courses will be devastated if they do that.
I know of whole Fed Gov agencies that have allowed their employees/govt workers, to work from home permanently. I know some of these workers. They are paid very well with excellent benefits and pensions. The big expensive Fed Govt office buildings are still sitting mostly empty in DC. If they are all working at home, time to save thecowners of the buildings (us) some money and start selling them off.
If they are doing real work, I’m happy for the government workers to stay home and telework forever.
But you can telework from anywhere. Any telework job or days working from home should lose all locality pay. (Government salaries are given a boost for their location, often another 20-25%, based on where their office is. Even if they aren’t in a high cost of livong location, there’s a baseline “rest of the US” location.)
Nixing all locality pay won’t happen, but, even if they are treated at Rest of the US rate, it would trigger a big move out of the DC area. If the government workers (far more than you would believe are making six figure salaries but still living paycheck to paycheck) moved out of the DC area to lower cost locales, immense second and third order effects will soon follow.
Better yet cut their jobs altogether.

Exactly. But if people keep debating things like telework, they’ll forget about this need, not just to shrink, but to start over with the bare minimum.
