The New College of Florida board of trustees has ousted its president, the first major shakeup of the institution since Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed six new members to the board.
President Patricia Okker will be succeeded by former Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, according to Politico. Corcoran previously served as the state's 100th Speaker of the House.
The DeSantis administration had contended that New College had been "completely captured by a political ideology that puts trendy, truth-relative concepts above learning," per the outlet.
Conservative activist Christopher Rufo, one of the newly appointed trustees, denied that the decision was meant to reflect poorly on Okker, but that the state-driven push for a change in the school's direction merited new leadership.
"New leadership is the expectation and I think it makes sense... I don't think it's a condemnation of Dr. Okker, scholarship or skills or character," he said.
"The reality is, and it's a hard reality and it's a sad reality, but the vision that we created together is not the vision I have been given as a mandate here," Okker told the board and campus, per the outlet.
The institution has fewer than 700 undergraduate students. Attendees may personalize their education plans and the school does not assign letter grades. The leadership change likely portends a more substantive shakeup of the school's entire educational approach.
Good.
keep on keepin’ on, Gov. Ron. just do good and trust in Him. God will do the rest
“For The Children”
Yes, we’re on to DeSantis but these actions are not to be criticized. The indoctrination of children is a valid issue to be addressed politically.
But there’s a valid related criticism which is:
“Why now? Why not years ago?”
This is not a new issue.
Given his continued duplicity, one can’t help but think this is for show.
“The New College of Florida”
I guess better than nothing, but it’s the Old College(s) that need real housecleaning.
This is good but in the larger scheme of American politics it doesn’t move the needle. This only applies to public colleges in Florida. Private colleges will continue to indoctrinate. The public colleges will likely continue to indoctrinate also in many ways. It’s really just a very minor victory to tell the truth. Reminds me of his gender bending/LGBT education ban for elementary school children grades kindergarten-3rd. 4th graders, 10 year olds and up, will still be exposed to the poison. It’s just nibbling around the edges.
Two big issues for me are the endless wars promulgated out of Washington and the wide open borders. Also a full accounting of actions this government took in response to covid would be nice. WHere is DeSantis on those issues.
New College, when re-vamped, in BEAUTIFUL Sarasota, will be as good as going to Gorgeous Pepperdine!
Thanks for your comment...amazing that there are folks on here that snipe at DeSantis regardless of what he achieves...give the man some time and quit bitching because you are a nobody but Trump advocate...I will vote for Trump or DeSantis...frankly, as a Floridian, I hope he chooses not to run this time.
omg......he has NOTHING to do with those Federal issues.....geesh.
Nothing like a Trump is always right and everybody else is a dunce believer.
Loved Trump and his policies, He screwed up in his personnel choices both for cabinet and Chief of Staff. I never trust anyone in such positions. As for DeSantis he started making changes in Florida long before his last election. He at least had the guts to run on a platform no other Governor was willing to run on in Florida and he has consistently worked to make changes in the State and succeeded. Trump was played by Ryan and McConnell did not get the Border Wall, did not get deportations, did not get changes in the Swamp, did not end Obamacare and he gave in to the Republicans on taxes without getting any other priorities accomplished.
I will support Trump if he is the nominee and work as hard as ever. I am pissed that too many Trump supporters cannot accept anyone else could be competent to be President. What happens in 2028 when Trump and some of his Allie’s have destroyed the opportunity for anyone to be President going forward?
Not blaming DeSantis for federal law. Just trying to put it in perspective. It’s not some great victory for America. Same with his anti-groomer elementary school law. It’s very limited in scope and effect.
Gone and soon forgotten for good reason.
OMG!! YOU are a NUT!
