A quarter of GOP say they'd back Trump as independent in 2024, threatening to split vote: Poll

More than a quarter of Republican voters say they’d back former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election even if he runs as a third-party candidate — possibly threatening to split the GOP electorate as the party seeks to win back the White House.

As the 2024 primary field begins to take shape, a majority of Republican voters are seeking to move past Trump and elevate another candidate as their party’s nominee. However, nearly 30% of “Always Trumpers” may be standing in their way, according to a new poll from the Bulwark.

“A large majority of GOP voters is ready to move on from Donald Trump. But a devoted minority might not let them,” said Sarah Longwell, who conducted the poll. “This is the 'Always Trump' faction of the Republican party. And they are why the GOP could be sleepwalking into another Donald Trump catastrophe.”

In a series of hypothetical matchups between Trump and other potential Republican candidates, polling shows the former president is fading with GOP voters at large. In a crowded primary field between Trump and nine of the party’s top contenders, the former president garnered roughly 28% of the vote — coming in below Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who clinched 39%, according to the poll.

If Trump runs as an independent, he will hand the Presidency to whatever warm body the DemocRATs nominate.

I doubt I’d see him sour grape an indy run unless they cheat to cause him to lose the primary....

And, I have 100% confidence the Uniparty/Globalist/GOPestablishment will do anything and everything they can, legally and illegally to keep Trump from being the nominee.

“Mitch would be so relieved. Then he wouldn’t have to wake up in a cold sweat worrying that a Republican could win the presidency. His worst nightmare. Goes for the whole swamp.”

Mitch will be happy with anyone but Trump, including a Democrat. He the head of the Uni-Party Swamp.

It doesn’t matter how many short-sighted conservatives would vote for Trump as an independent. All that matters is if Trump has the common sense to either run as the GOP nominee, or not run at all.

Trump has a big ego. Nothing automatically wrong with that. Great leaders often have big egos. But sometimes a big ego will lead a person to chose something that is personally satisfying, but ultimately destructive. So please Mr. Trump, no third-party stuff.

Side note: I sure wish we had a presidential run-off system like some other countries have. Then a third-party run would make sense.

Even Trump somtime this past year mentioned Teddy Roosevelt’s “Bull Moose” run. It not only split the GOP it split GOP voters and gave the election to Woodrow Wilson. To all the GOP people in the country, that was no “victory”. Teddy, like Trump took political rejection personally.

“a majority of Republican voters are seeking to move past Trump and elevate another candidate as their party’s nominee”

Hmm, maybe if you added up all the other potential nominees’ support, but that’s not how primaries work. Trump is still the #1 pick for Republican nominee.

>>Yes I will write him in if he’ not allowed to run as the Republican nominee.

Agreed. Trump is the only reason I’ve stayed a Republican. The party that I’ve been with since the age of 8 has disappointed me past mending. Trump is the only politician I trust and I’ll be with him to the bitter end. When he’s gone, to me, this Republic is gone.

Romney will not run and if he did he most likely wouldn’t get the nomination again.

“A small percentage of conservatives will toss the election...”

You can’t toss an election that is already rigged.

I’m not a Banana Republican..

Trump has my vote.
Even if it’s a write in..

The Banana Republican party has birthed the country Presidential candidates of Bush,Dole,Bush, McCain, Romney before Trump.

And many in that Banana R party are very pleased Trump was robbed.
And most of those above names appeared to be direct adversaries for Trump and MAGA.

That’s the Banana R party legacy that needs to be buried..

They haven’t been sending their best,to semi quote a famous billionaire turned political infiltrator..

Some people think they are entitled to the nomination and/or the office.

Fact is, there is only one Constitutional authority: the Electoral College.

Get Smart GOP, Back Trump 100%, Run him, Elect him, and on Inauguration day Decimate the Prog Left Socialist Democrats and Deep Swamp.

Trump has no path to the White House. He loses every state he lost in 2020 with the addition of NC.

If you want a Democrat President, House and Senate elected in 2024, put Trump's name at the top of the ticket because that's exactly what you'll get.

People better figure this out.

He takes everything personally. It’s all about him. He wants loyalty above all, he hates disagreement, he’s never had to eat sh!t and say “yes sir!”. Pure ego. The fact that he’s right on a bunch of important issues gets him a pass.

I don’t expect to like my leaders, I expect them to be thieving, egotistical scumbags; I just expect them to address the issues that need to be addressed with competence and focus.

There’s never been a person even seriously discussed as President who wasn’t a liar and a crook- well maybe George Washington- just like there aren’t any short people in the NBA.

The mission of the MSM and their deep state overlords could not be clearer going into the 2024 election.

They are going to sow division within the GOP and we already see that Trump/DeSantis/Haley etc, are rising to the challenge and playing the game AND they are going to run an independent who only has to appeal to 1-2% of GOP voters. Combine that with the 1% of Libertarian votes that are typically pretty steady and say hello to President Kalifornia.

It is not popular to say here on FR and some people are in denial but there are a small number of republicans who simply will NOT vote for Trump. This is a fact. I know a few. While, he increased his votes in 2020 and that was remarkable so did Biden who campaigned from his basement. We have a LOT of election problems and they are not getting solved.

As long as the democrats can harvest ballots there is NO margin for error for any republican candidate and Trump may have an even slimmer margin than a generic republican no matter how well he polls in the primaries (he will be the nominee).

If they make the DeSantis/Trump feud into a nasty battle (it has the potential) we will lose the election. Period. Those two need to refuse to play the game no matter how many times they stick a mic under their nose but we KNOW that Trump can’t help himself and frankly DeSantis has a chippy streak as well.

The media knows this so they will stir, stir, and stir and bait them at every turn and WE WILL LOSE. Look at the numbers from 2020. Any third party “conservative Trump protest candidate” will tip the election - it was that close.

The media will give the 1% “Republican” independent an outsized amount of media coverage. Name one race in the last three elections where they actually “found” votes for the republican after election day. Just one.

Lower the number needed to harvest after the election ends by 30,000 votes and that is 30,000 less they need to harvest. They can easily cover this margin in the swing states. It’s insane.
