I imagine it is pretty safe if you stick with the group and don’t do something stupid like wandering off on your own to “experience the local culture”.

yeah. I would not have wanted to go to sa on my own.

together with our guides the group was in a bubble. I could feel the bubble. both just inside and just outside.

at one point we were on safari. jeeps drove up to some lions on a giraffe kill. there were about 4 lions on the kill and another 6 or so in the grass that would pop their heads up from time to time. we were right next to them.

inside the jeep was safe. but step outside the jeep and your world would change rapidly.

that’s what it felt like in johannesburg and capetown and some of the towns between. inside our bubble all was good. step outside and things could change rapidly.

a lot of US cities are that way too.
