Remnants of an ancient city dating back to the Roman Empire have been unearthed in the Egyptian city of Luxor.

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery in a news release Tuesday.

Images of the site reveal the remains of a residential community.

Authorities are describing the unearthed city as the oldest remaining structures in this area of Luxor.

Mostafa Waziri of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities called the area the β€œmost important and oldest residential city on the eastern mainland in Luxor Governorate,” according to the news release, as translated by Google.

Modern-day Luxor contains the ruins of Thebes, an ancient Egyptian city that dates back thousands of years, according to Britannica.

Waziri said the newly found structures are believed to date back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, according to Art News.

Maybe they can hire the mooselimb excavating team? How do ruins like that get "covered" over so rapidly? Was it rapidly? Was there a yuge dust storm? Interesting.

A little paneling, some bath tile and a pocket door and it will sell for $495,000.

Pompeii is still the most amazing example of preservation, but obviously not from sand.

My father was born in a small mountaintop village in Italy dated to around 1,000 AD when it went on the tax rolls. Below the village are the ruins of an older village. You can walk right through the roofless walls which stick up about 4 feet above the ground. A minimal survey was done dating it to around 500 AD.

Old stuff is all over the place. About 10 miles away a small city called Juvanum has been excavated. Lots of marble, a fountain with water that still flows, and an amphitheater. A museum has been built and is full of artifacts. It has been dated to about 500AD. It was occupied by the Samnites, a tribe never completely absorbed by the Roman Empire.
