Trump sues Bob Woodward and publisher for $50 million over use of his interview recordings

Former President Donald Trump sued famed journalist Bob Woodward on Monday over the release of audio recordings of his interviews with Trump, who claims he never agreed to allow those tapes to be sold to the public.

Woodward, publisher Simon & Schuster and its parent company, Paramount Global, “unlawfully usurped” Trump’s copyright interests and other rights by publishing an audiobook featuring hours of “raw” audio from Woodward’s many interviews with Trump, the lawsuit alleges.

The suit seeks $50 million or more which it says is based on an estimate that the audiobook, “The Trump Tapes,” sold more than 2 million copies at $24.99 apiece.

The 31-page complaint, filed in federal court in Pensacola, Florida, alleges that Trump “repeatedly stated to Woodward, in the presence of others, that he was agreeing to be recorded for the sole purpose of Woodward being able to write a single book.”

That book, 2021′s “Rage,” failed to replicate the success of Woodward’s previous book on the Trump White House, according to the lawsuit. Woodward then “decided to exploit, usurp, and capitalize upon President Trump’s voice by releasing the Interview Sound Recordings of their interviews with President Trump in the form of an audiobook,” the complaint alleges.

Simon & Schuster did not immediately comment on the lawsuit.

Woodward interviewed Trump over the phone and in person 19 times between December 2019 and August 2020, according to the lawsuit. Woodward and his publisher assembled more than eight hours of audio from those interviews, plus another from 2016, for the audiobook, which was released last October “without President Trump’s permission,” the lawsuit says.

Trump “made Woodward aware on multiple occasions, both on and off the record, of the nature of the limited license to any recordings, therefore retaining for himself the commercialization and all other rights

You’d think they’d learn but they NEVER do

You are not understanding. It’s Woodwards’ right to the use if the tapes. Woodward was given the right to record and use those recordings as notes in which to write a book but he did not have the right to make the tapes public and does not have the right to profit from the publication of the tapes.

Frivolous lawsuit? You clearly don’t know a thing about business or the law.

First if all, how do you know DeSantis has “contempt” for them all? Did he tell you that?

Clearly I do. But you wouldn’t know. Believe me, if Biden under the same circumstances had convos like that with Candace Owens who published them and Biden later sued, the claim of frivolous lawsuit would be flying high.

Or de santis doesn’t need affirmation from the press and is smart enough not to let a snake into the tent

Trump need money this bad? Because this isn’t good PR.

If he wants to sue somebody, it should be over his claim elections are being stolen. Or how some border policy is still in effect.

Woodward is revered by many journalists, so this will only worsen his coverage.

Wasn’t it Mitch McConnell?

I disagree, it's sport to him. If he didn't agree to it, it would probably be because of a calendar issue.

Do you know how completely ridiculous you look when you post garbage like this? DeSantis took on and beat Disney. That’s like the Governor of Arkansas taking on WalMart.

Trump is smarter than the press. He has long used the liberal media to get his message out to Americans.

Most GOP are cowards who will only appear in safe spaces talking to the already converted. That won’t win any new minds.

Another example of Trump self sabotage.

Trumps sits down with all these liberal journalists who hate his guts and then cries when they repeat the things he said that he thought were off the record. Woodward wasn't the only one. There were many others.

It's Bob Freakin' Woodward, for cryin' out loud! Was Trump expecting some glowing hagiography from the man who brought down Nixon?

Trump's need to be loved by his enemies is yet another one of his Achilles' heels.

Just like the good little lawyer he is, he wants to make sure he has calculated all the risk, instead simply leading and taking the fight to them in ALL situations.

The difference of course is that DeSantis is winning his fights whereas with Trump, it's always, "LEEROY JENKINS!!!"

But the grass roots was making claims about suits such as Trumps not so long ago, until it was a Trump suit. Then suddenly frivolous suits had merit.
