American and NATO efforts to assist Ukraine in its conflict with Russia have escalated alarmingly since Putin launched his invasion almost one year ago. We began by doing virtually nothing to help Ukraine, except rhetorically and by way of offering Ukrainian leaders a one-way flight into exile. Since then we have imposed history-making economic and financial sanctions against Russia, and we have progressively taken on the responsibilities of funding, supplying, training, and providing intelligence for the Ukrainian security forces. It is an open question whether the average Ukrainian soldier now serves under Volodymyr Zelenskyy or Joe Biden.
...[snip]...
What effect, then, will it have on Putin’s resolve and Russian public opinion when the German Foreign Minister casually declares war against Russia, and when Germany dispatches its most modern tanks to fight on Ukrainian battlefields? The question answers itself. These intemperate actions are a fulfillment of the worst Russian nightmare: of an aggressive Western campaign to invade and destroy Russia herself (of which Ukraine is a part, in most Russian minds). It is a repeat, in fact, of the German tactics of World War II, which sought to use Ukrainian “nationalists” as cannon fodder against Soviet Russian forces. All this is confirmation, from the Russian point of view, of the extremely high stakes for which they are fighting, and of the fact that they, not Ukraine, are the nation that is targeted for destruction.
...[snip]...
In the medium term, it is much more likely that Russia will mobilize more of its reserves and militarize as much of its industrial sector as possible so as to facilitate an all-out effort to defeat the present government and security forces of Ukraine in a spring or summer offensive. And that, of course, will pose to the West even more agonizing questions about the lengths to which we are willing to go to “win” a war in Ukraine that we, by our naïveté and arrogance, helped to provoke, and which we seem to have no earthly idea how to end on favorable terms.
I disagree.
The recent history of Ukraine involves their voluntary surrender of nuclear weapons in exchange for independence from Russia and implied security guarantees from NATO and the USA.
There was no formal treaty, but Ukraine would have kept its nuclear weapons without those implied guarantees.
Also, Ukraine as part of Russia is a fairly recent historical and geographical concept.
In the last 2,000 years, all, or parts of, Ukraine have been under the control of the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, various central Asian tribes, Austria-Hungary, and the Polish Empire.
“The usual suspects”
The world needs another modern day Masada in America but leave the orthodox alone.
I wondered about the same thing, starting off with the title; I’d think the “Crusaders” would be the Christian side of the fight, and that certainly isn’t the one we’re on.
Take me off your list, thanks
That's correct. But, this is not about the Ukies it is about Russia. They have been and still are the most dangerous and aggressive foe we have had in the last 20th century. Every other major country has learned to live in peace with other countries except Russia. We need to end this threat once and for all and now we have a golden opportunity to do it. Lets us not lose sight of that fact. Just about every other country sees what I have mentioned and is helping in one way or the other. Why do you think Finland and Lithuania are joining Nato? They are doing so because they see Russia as the threat that it is and has been and they do not want to go back to the bad old days of the Soviet Union and neither do I. If they can't beat little Ukraine do you really think they are going to start a nuclear war with all of the rest of us?
“Every other major country has learned to live in peace with other countries except Russia.”
Ludicrous. USA is the principal example.
“If they can’t beat little Ukraine do you really think they are going to start a nuclear war with all of the rest of us?”
I think they will use tactical nukes in Ukraine and NATO will not respond militarily. Because nobody in NATO has an interest in Ukraine. And nobody in NATO wants to trade nukes with Russia.
sure thing
With pleasure! No more garbage comments from you? Outstanding!
I'll try to identify them, maybe others can join in:
Top Row, left to right:
don't know, don't know, Robert Gates?, Bill Kristol, don't know
Second Row:
don't know, Paul Wolfowitz, Joe Lieberman, don't know, don't know
Third Row:
David Frum, don't know, don't know, Charles Krauthammer, Bibi Netenyahu
Fourth Row:
Don't know, don't know, Scooter Libby, don't know, Bob Novack.
(Robert Novack, if that's who it is, wasn't a NeoCon and frequently argued against their projects like the invasion of Iraq.
The NeoCon movement was started by, and dominated by Jewish intellectuals who had previously been Trotskyites. Irving Kriston (Bill's father) is usually considered the founder.
There are some prominent NeoCons who aren't Jewish: Jeanie Kirkpatrick, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney, Condalizza Rice, and of course no list would be complete with John Bolton.
In the current crisis the top visible NeoCons driving this disaster are: Victoria Nuland, her husband Robert Kagan, and again like a bad penny: David Frum ("Axis of Evil") who is editor of the Atlantic Magazine now. Of course the wole NeoCon journalist group is in for the ride: Bill Kristol, David Brooks, David French, The Bullwark, etc.
Irving Kristol literally "wrote the book" about Neoconservaism:
Which I have read and is a good book, albeit not an objective look at the movement.
A critique was published a while back by Jeffrey Sachs, who I'll note is himself Jewish. Here's a link, I'll excerpt it at length:
Ukraine Is the Latest Neocon Disaster
The main message of the neocons is that the US must predominate in military power in every region of the world, and must confront rising regional powers that could someday challenge US global or regional dominance, most important Russia and China.Anyone interested can read the rest at the link. The war in Ukraine is the culmination of a 30-year project of the American neoconservative movement. The Biden Administration is packed with the same neocons who championed the US wars of choice in Serbia (1999), Afghanistan (2001), Iraq (2003), Syria (2011), Libya (2011), and who did so much to provoke Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The neocon track record is one of unmitigated disaster, yet Biden has staffed his team with neocons. As a result, Biden is steering Ukraine, the US, and the European Union towards yet another geopolitical debacle. If Europe has any insight, it will separate itself from these US foreign policy debacles.
The neocon outlook is based on an overriding false premise: that the US military, financial, technological, and economic superiority enables it to dictate terms in all regions of the world.
The neocon movement emerged in the 1970s around a group of public intellectuals, several of whom were influenced by University of Chicago political scientist Leo Strauss and Yale University classicist Donald Kagan. Neocon leaders included Norman Podhoretz, Irving Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz, Robert Kagan (son of Donald), Frederick Kagan (son of Donald), Victoria Nuland (wife of Robert), Elliott Cohen, Elliott Abrams, and Kimberley Allen Kagan (wife of Frederick).
The main message of the neocons is that the US must predominate in military power in every region of the world, and must confront rising regional powers that could someday challenge US global or regional dominance, most important Russia and China. For this purpose, US military force should be pre-positioned in hundreds of military bases around the world and the US should be prepared to lead wars of choice as necessary. The United Nations is to be used by the US only when useful for US purposes.
This approach was spelled out first by Paul Wolfowitz in his draft Defense Policy Guidance (DPG) written for the Department of Defense in 2002. The draft called for extending the US-led security network to the Central and Eastern Europe despite the explicit promise by German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher in 1990 that German unification would not be followed by NATO's eastward enlargement. Wolfowitz also made the case for American wars of choice, defending America's right to act independently, even alone, in response to crises of concern to the US. According to General Wesley Clark, Wolfowitz already made clear to Clark in May 1991 that the US would lead regime-change operations in Iraq, Syria, and other former Soviet allies.
The neocons championed NATO enlargement to Ukraine even before that became official US policy under George W. Bush, Jr. in 2008. They viewed Ukraine's NATO membership as key to US regional and global dominance. Robert Kagan spelled out the neocon case for NATO enlargement in April 2006:
[T]he Russians and Chinese see nothing natural in [the "color revolutions" of the former Soviet Union], only Western-backed coups designed to advance Western influence in strategically vital parts of the world. Are they so wrong? Might not the successful liberalization of Ukraine, urged and supported by the Western democracies, be but the prelude to the incorporation of that nation into NATO and the European Union--in short, the expansion of Western liberal hegemony?
It's obvious that any group picture of NeoCons will be mostly Jewish guys, because it's a movement that is made up of mostly Jewish guys.
Of all the Jews in the world maybe .001% are NeoCons, so I'm not using the word as a codeword for "Jewish". I dislike some of the Goyish NeoCons as much or more than the Jewish ones (John Bolton, John McCain), and highly value Jewish paleocons and MAGA types like Prof. Paul Gottfried.
So no it's not "the joooos", it's "the NeoCons".
Is it a sexual thrill for you? So many of the hardline Ukraine supporters do seem to act like cartoon Nazi's taking glee in the death of young Russian soldiers like this.
You are a creep. Go away.
Actually I take glee in seeing an Invading Terrorist Russian Nazi get his just desserts, VladZERO.
The real conflict is between BRICs and the US backed central banking.
We are not winning that one either.
“Every other major country has learned to live in peace with other countries except Russia.”
Ludicrous. USA is the principal example.”
This is what passes for conservative now.
“nobody in NATO has an interest in Ukraine”
No it is not about Ukraine it is about Russia.
“This is what passes for conservative now.”
It has always been thus. If it doesn’t suit you, go to the Democrat party. They are all about those do-gooder interventions.
Perhaps it where you belong.
Conservatives have recognized Russia as a threat in the past and it was libs who talked like you do now. Just because they are no longer communist does not mean a thing they are still the same aggressive ruthless murderous despots they have been for the last 100 years. Most of us have always seen what they were until recently. We thought they had changed but haven’t. I do not choose to go back to them being the threat that they were and are now. I do not want to see them continually lurking at the rest of us through a gun sight, enough is enough. This is a golden opportunity to put them out of business hopefully for good. It would be a crying shame not to take advantage of it.
“This is a golden opportunity to put them out of business hopefully for good.”
One has to be stupider than dirt to think that can be done to a country that has 7,000 nuclear weapons and the ability to deliver them.
You are anti American.
You would sacrifice millions of Americans to protect a corrupt eastern European country where we have no interests.
Look who is talking. You are clearly on the side of What is still Americas biggest enemy. We are not sacrificing Americans we are stopping a ruthless dictatorship that is still the biggest threat to the peace of this world.
