Former President Donald Trump is leading his potential challengers in South Carolina by double-digits, a recent Trafalgar Group survey found.

The survey asked respondents, “If the Republican presidential primary were held today and the following were the candidates, for whom would you most likely vote?”

Trump stood as the overwhelming favorite, garnering 43.4 percent support. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) falls 15.6 percent behind with 27.8 percent support. South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) fell to third with 14.3 percent support, followed by former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley with 11.6 percent, former Vice President Mike Pence with 1.8 percent, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with 1.1 percent:

2024 South Carolina Republican Primary:

When DeSantis is taken out of the mix, Trump’s support grows to 47.9 percent, and Scott and Haley surge, garnering 22.8 percent and 21.1 percent, respectively.

The survey was taken January 24-26, 2023, among 1,078 likely GOP presidential primary voters. It has a +/- 2.9 percent margin of error.

It coincides with Trump’s busy campaign weekend, visiting the early primary states of New Hampshire as well as South Carolina.

“This campaign will be about issues, ” Trump explained. “Joe Biden has put America on the fast track to ruin and destruction, and we will ensure that he does not receive four more years.”

The 2024 election is our one shot to save our country, and we need a leader who is ready to do that on day one. We need a fighter who can stand up to the left, who can stand up to the swamp, stand up to the media, stand up to the deep state … am I allowed to say stand up to the RINOs too?

He has primaries when it’s crowded with other candidates.

Nicely, this takes out Desantis….but it doesn’t say what happens Trump-DS head to head.

Trump’s lead is tenuous and dependent on how many are in the race.

There is only one announced candidate.

There is over a year to go until the first of many debates and primaries.

The number of hopefuls will be amazingly large.

I'll vote for whomever wins the GOP nom (and I'll of course vote early.)

That said, I lean DeSantis at the moment, with Pompeo as a second place.

Trafalgar, the worst polling outfit of 2022.

Anyhow, here's another recent poll:

Ron DeSantis romps over Donald Trump in poll of South Carolina Republicans’ 2024 preference (52% - 33%)

“we need a leader who is ready to do that on day one.”

Lead us where? I’ll vote for the one who’s goals for the country are closest to mine.

I’m leaning Trump at this point in time, with no 2nd place option at the moment.

Looks like DeSantis in a landslide.(Sarcasm)

Have you heard my line about Desantis?

“DeSantis is the greatest President in American history.”

You have asked the wrong question.

When you get to the general you have to ask—what have the republicans done to mitigate democrat cheating and play a better game themselves.

Right now—no matter who the republicans put up in 2024—the democrats will win by cheating and by manipulating the ballots. They ran circles around the republicans in 2020 and 2022. If the republicans play the same game in 2024—they will lose—no matter matter who they put up.

Pompeo has shown himself to be great at cabinet posts. He seems to have the temper, demeanor and instincts of a good cabinet secretary.

But he has not shown himself in executive leadership positions. These are different animals.

“No doubt Trump has the primaries but what about head to head with biden6 or the next Democrat?”

Good question, but on the flip side there are probably 10 to 20 million Trump voters that will ONLY turn out for Trump, unless Trump endorses someone credible in his place.

At this point, I’d consider DeSantis as credible, but the DeSantis has to somehow win the nomination without pissing off those Trump voters...or else he’ll join Spiro in the history of Republican wipeouts.

What you say is true. ANY candidate will lose unless the GOP-e decides that voter fraud is a big issue and many conservative voters will not stand in line for hours when they know their suffrage is useless.

It’s not exclusively a “Donald problem” but a GOP in problem.
