The bombing drew nationwide condemnation from Pakistani opposition political parties and government officials. Ghulam Ali, the provincial governor in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where Peshawar is the capital, said there were fears the death toll could rise even further.
Most of the casualties were policemen and police officers – the targeted mosque is located within a sprawling compound, which also serves as the city's police headquarters.
Police said between 300 to 350 worshipers were inside the mosque when the bomber detonated his explosives. Sarbakaf Mohmand, a commander for the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter.
The main spokesman for the organisation was not immediately available for comment. The police compound is located in a high-security zone in Peshawar, along with several government buildings, and it was unclear how the bomber managed to penetrate so deep inside the zone unnoticed.

Why was the mosque attacked?
In Pakistan, on average around over a 1000 underage girls belonging to the minority Hindu, Christian and Sikh communities are kidnapped and forcefully converted to Islam every year and forcibly married and subjected to rape.

I am going to guess to kill a bunch of cops while they were gathered at the mosque.
White suprema-cyst rhetoric seems likely. 🤔
How much stuff would it take to blow out that wall?
How can you say that? Is Islam not a religion of peace? I am so surprised that it is not happening here with the many mosques that uglify our skyline. America the once beautiful and now permanently damaged.
Despicable monsters.
Coming to a US city near you!
Like csvset said, it would seem at first glance the target was all the cops who prayed there.
I was in Jordan a few years ago. We had to cross the border on foot into Israel to catch a plane. We happened to get to the border at their late afternoon (early evening?) prayer time. They literally shut the border - nobody in or out - while all the people who worked at the crossing - from security to the passport clerks and even our tour guides - went to the mosque to pray. So thinking of that experience, if you wanted to target a specific group of people for political (not for religious reasons per se) then that may be one way to do it. You know they tend to pray at the mosque where they work.
Not to say it couldn't be both. One sect crazy guy wants to bomb the law enforcement of another sect. That could be possible too.
Many thousands of them are already here, well-armed, scoping ‘soft targets’, and waiting for their “go orders”.
Sooo, why is France24 meddling in islamic matters?
Jeeeze, it looks like a truck bomb.
The bombings are condemned only when it’s against other muslims.
When it’s on US soil, there’s dancing in the streets.
From Dawn.com In response to a question about the nature of the blast, the official said: “The smell of explosives has been detected but it is too early to say anything substantial.”
Thinking it was probably a fuel/fertilizer bomb , a truck or car load worth ? This was inside a high security area. They say the roof collapsed, another building close by was also damaged .
A vehicle with the right pass or whatever, knew how to get a bomb to the cops mosque.
Pakistan has had a rough go of it lately.
Lately? It's been a basket case since it's founding. Thank you Mr Jinnah.
