California Has More Than 100 Gun Laws. Why Don’t They Stop More Mass Shootings?

SACRAMENTO — California bans guns for domestic violence offenders. It bans them for people deemed a danger to others or themselves. There is a ban on large-capacity magazines, and a ban on noise-muffling silencers. Semiautomatic guns of the sort colloquially known as “assault weapons” are, famously, banned.

More than 100 gun laws — the most of any state — are on the books in California. They have saved lives, policymakers say: Californians have among the lowest rates of gun death in the United States.

Yet this month, those laws failed to stop the massacres of at least 19 people in back-to-back mass shootings. The tragedies in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay have confounded Americans who regard California as a best-case bastion of gun safety in a nation awash with firearms.

Gun rights proponents say the shootings show that California’s strategy is a failure. Gun safety groups, meanwhile, have already begun mobilizing for more laws and better enforcement.

The state’s regulatory net does not necessarily force gun owners to relinquish weapons that were legal for them to buy in the past but now are banned. California cannot remove guns from people who may have exhibited dangerous behavior, but aren’t properly flagged to courts or law enforcement.

The shootings are offering a lesson in the limits of state power to stop American gun violence, even with the political will at all levels of the state government to do so.

“I don’t mean to sound forlorn, but I’ve been watching this for decades and I’m a gun control type guy, and I just see nothing coming out of it,” said Steve Wagstaffe, the district attorney in San Mateo County, where seven agricultural workers were fatally gunned down. “California has had some good laws, but they’re not as good as they could be.”

California has been gun control happy ever since since the NRA backed the Mulford Act.

California Has More Than 100 Gun Laws. Why Don’t They Stop More Mass Shootings?

Because those Laws are designed to make all shootings more likely and more successful.

With a plethora of laws, many of which are in direct contradiction of others, there is not much will to enforce ANY of them. A law on the books that nobody has the gumption to enforce, is called “dead letter”, and a mockery to all the legal structure.

Symbolism and virtue signaling are both pretty toothless, and with the insistence that the law enforcement officers specifically do NOT act, it is as if anarchy has already won.

California’s gun laws take the guns from law-abiding citizens and ignore those in the hands of criminals. They have a lot of laws against gun involved crimes, buy those are seldom enforced as criminals have their charges reduced or dismissed and are allowed out of jail within bail to continue their criminal career.

California is a sanctuary state for illegal aliens and they compound their crimes by joining gangs, stealing guns, committing property crimes, and killing citizens. The district attorneys say “We shouldn’t punish them for these actions”, and allow them to go their merry way. Soon, there is another mass shooting, many times by someone who shouldn’t even be here in the first place.

NYT’s, buy a clue!

Kalifornika is more interested in making problems for gun owners than to enforce law.

The problem is every politician gets in on the gun-free zone thing. I have yet to find a politician that allows one to exercise their Second Amendment rights at a political event. The justification is the usual tired gun-grabbing nonsense about safety.

Well, just kill all the white people and take away their guns and everything will be fine. White supremacy is causing all of this. /s

Maybe it’s as simple as Criminals don’t obey laws. If they did they wouldn’t be criminals any longer.

Maybe I oversimplified it a bit?!

California Has More Than 100 Gun Laws. Why Don’t They Stop More Mass Shootings?

Because that is not the purpose or intention of gun control laws.

The intention is to disarm law-abiding citizens so they cannot even think about resisting predators - especially predatory government officials.

Criminals are de-facto allies of the government, as long as they limit their predations to approved targets. Keeping citizens constantly fearful of attack makes them beg for ever tighter government controls and makes them more willing to obey the authorities.

The Criminals don’t follow the law as enacted by Ca. legislators; its that simple. Law abiding citizens don’t break laws.
