It started long long before that in the 1920’s when some guys named Stepan Bandera and Mykola Lebed started to build a Ukrainian national identity built on racial purity, that targeted Slavs (Poles Baltics and Russians, along with Jews, Romanis and Hungarians) for elimination from the gene pool.
This made Bandera and Lebed natural and enthusiastic collaborators with the German nazis in WW2. One of the worst massacres at Babi Yar was carried out with Germans and the Ukrainian OUN collaborators…who were actually in the majority of the executioners ( based on their own proud written accounts)
The Maidan coup of 2014 did not start this drive to ethnic genocide…it unleashed it with the support of the neo-nazi ( aka “uktranationalist”) groups that had become entrenched as Uke power influencers.

Russia has been removing Russian speakers from Donbas and Luhansk and sending them off to their new homes in Siberia.
When Kherson was recently retaken by Ukraine the only people left living there were all ethnic Ukrainians.
Russia itself is carrying out the de-Russification and ethnic cleansing of eastern Ukraine. By the time Ukraine retakes its territory from the gangsters there won’t be any Russian colonists left in Ukraine.
The only question is did these people leave willingly?

Language does not always correspond to national identity. Something Putin and fellow Russians cannot seem to understand.
As much as it hurts me to say this, Zelensky and the far right Neo Nazi Ukrainians were waging a campaign of terror in eastern Ukraine when Russia invaded. Russia invaded over the NATO issue and the access to the Black Sea issue.Plus Biden whether through stupidity or design green lighted the invasion when he and Blinken stated that sanctions would only come into play after an invasion. That was implying that there would be nothing stopping an invasion. Might as well throw my lab a ham bone. Putin thought the 45% of Ukrainians of Russian heritage would be on his side. Bad call. Now come 200 tanks from Europe and 31 from the US. That is about 1 yr tank production from the Russian main tank factory at current production rates. Who knows if countries like Pakistan, India, and China will sell Russia back some of it’s tanks in the future. ( or trade for oil and gas). Next will come fighter planes for Ukraine. At some point Russia will decide enough is enough and lash out as only few countries are capable of. We should be brokering a cease fire, not adding fuel to the fire. Of course the Biden administration wouldn’t know reality if it shit in their depends.

Sorry, I just don’t buy the idea that even the Donbas wanted secession. The self-declared DPR exists because under 1000 separatists, supported by Russians on holiday, took over government buildings.
At no point ever in their existence did the DPR even attempt to act like a normal government. It is a paramilitary bandit outfit fronted by a handful of Ukrainians, that has strenuously avoided doing anything that might give it legitimacy.
No elections in eight years. No civic government. Introduction of the death penalty for people fighting on Ukraine’s side, despite both Ukraine and Russia having moratoriums in place on capital punishment.
That’s how confident they were that they had popular support.
Rigged referenda held at gunpoint while over a million legitimate voters from the Donbas region who’d fled the combat zone into other parts of Ukraine (or further afield) didn’t get a vote.
Russian tourists and Russian appointed electoral monitors voting for annexation.
And my particular favorite, a referendum count being televised in Russia where you can watch a zombified official putting TOTALLY UNMARKED ballot papers into the “yes to annexation” pile for five minutes.
