To become the presidential nominee, a candidate typically has to win a majority of delegates. This usually happens through the party’s state primaries and caucuses.

I understand. However I think this election cycle is going to be a contentious one and it will not be clear who the leader will be quite as soon as in the past. Remember , Trump lost Iowa last time in the primaries. If he loses there again and the next set of primaries then we have a problem.
