A portrait of Tyre Nichols is displayed at a memorial service for him on Jan. 17.
The five Memphis Police officers fired in the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died three days after a traffic stop earlier this month, were behind bars on Thursday.
Last week, the five officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith — involved in Nichols’s Jan. 7 arrest were terminated.
They were booked at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis and were each charged with second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, “aggravated assault — acting in concert,” official misconduct and official oppression, according to online records from the sheriff's office.
On Wednesday evening, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis said in a video statement, in which she braced the community ahead of the release of bodycam footage showing Nichols’s arrest, that the beating he received was “heinous, reckless and inhumane.”
Crump’s co-counsel described Nichols as defenseless in the video. “He was a piñata to those police officers. It was an unadulterated, unabashed, nonstop beating of this young boy for three minutes,” lawyer Antonio Romanucci said during the press conference.
The police chief said the video will be released “in the coming days”

It sounds to me like he DID have a reason to be scared! Look at his picture, he wasn’t a large person. Every single one of the 5 cops was much bigger than him.
All were driving unmarked cars. He may not have even known they were cops. The story I hear is they pulled in front of his car and cut him off and then mass descended on him, which made him run.
In Memphis a lot of people drive 20 mph over the speed limit.
If you have to go through there on the interstate DO NOT try to drive the speed limit. At least 10 mph more.
One time I tried to see how fast a gasoline truck was going down I-40. I was on my motorcycle. Once I hit 90 mph I got scared and it sped away.
BTW Nichols did not have a criminal history. He moved to Memphis to work at FedEx.
In Atlanta everyone drives fast. If you’re doing the speed limit on I285 you get run over.
I still haven’t heard of the cause of death yet, whether it was related to the beatings (direct trauma), induced by them(heart attack due to stress), or unrelated(congenital problem or drugs).
The beating sure sounds out-of-bounds, though.
My understanding it was a traffic stop that he refused to stop at, then was pepper sprayed and ran off. It was about 100 feet (or less) from his parents home, where I believe he lives.
Still, traffic stops shouldn’t end in death.
commit second degree murder while their bodycams record the crime
Which means they were NOT in plain clothes - or least some of them were not.
Atlanta has been that way for years. Even on Sunday afternoon.
I don’t know what happened just read the lead in - but nothing really deserves a ‘savage beating’. These are supposed to be trained professionals. Five cops should be able to restrain one scrawny kid and put him in cuffs without pummeling him for 3 minutes.
