Mug shots, from top left, of Desmond Mills Jr., Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith, the Memphis police officers who are accused in the death of Tyre Nichols.
A portrait of Tyre Nichols is displayed at a memorial service for him on Jan. 17.
The five Memphis Police officers fired in the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died three days after a traffic stop earlier this month, were behind bars on Thursday.
Last week, the five officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith — involved in Nichols’s Jan. 7 arrest were terminated.
They were booked at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis and were each charged with second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, “aggravated assault — acting in concert,” official misconduct and official oppression, according to online records from the sheriff's office.
On Wednesday evening, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis said in a video statement, in which she braced the community ahead of the release of bodycam footage showing Nichols’s arrest, that the beating he received was “heinous, reckless and inhumane.”
Crump’s co-counsel described Nichols as defenseless in the video. “He was a piñata to those police officers. It was an unadulterated, unabashed, nonstop beating of this young boy for three minutes,” lawyer Antonio Romanucci said during the press conference.
The police chief said the video will be released “in the coming days”

I read the article. And of course I was not surprised to find no mention as to why Tyre was stopped in the place. And what happened that resulted in such a savage beating
There is so much to this story we don’t know. I had read that these officers were in plain cloths and bum rushed him. Not sure if there is truth to that. I will wait to see all the details before passing any judgements.
The omission you talk about - the reason for him being stopped in the first place - is typical of today’s shoddy journalism, and it gets shoddier in cases involving alleged police misconduct.
......sounds to me like another case of “over-charging”.
Interesting too that we have all black cop perps, a black victim (if he is) and black prosecutors (I’m assuming).
I will wait to see all the details before passing any judgements.

RACIST!!! /s
These boys are heading to the Big House for a long time...the sacrificial goats..
I think the kid was doing like twenty over the speed limit so they pulled him over for reckless driving and he got scared and ran. Not too smart but still......
Let’s see: He’s afraid for his life so he runs away and then the cops catch him and beat him to death.
Makes perfect sense.
Yeh, I don’t think there’s any way to explain this one away. The victim was not a criminal. Maybe he had good reason to run. They refer to these guys as the scorpion squad so I guess they have a reputation.
It doesn’t matter what he did before the stop. Force isn’t supposed to be retributive, it’s supposed to be enough to stop the perp, and that’s all.
I suspect we’re going to be sickened by what we see.
In Oregon there was a man named James Chassee, who did nothing but walk away from cops telling him to stop.
They ran over to him and punched, kicked and kneed his, beating the absolute crap out of him...until they beat him to death.
Cops are not all the peace officers we’re trained to believe they are...some of them turn into vicious, feral animals just looking for a chance to kill someone.
They look like a choir. I wonder who starts singing first?
Tribalism on display.
Tribe 1, the cops.
Tribe 2, everyone else.
Throw in the general lack of respect that is shown by “the community” towards most situations an individuals and you have a ticking time bomb.
Time to loot and burn down white owned businesses.
I happened to work with this man and though I don’t know his whole life, I do know he worked well at work and he didn’t deserve to be beaten to death by 5 police officers.
They claimed reckless driving which could mean anything as the reason he was stopped.
