Older people living with HIV who used cannabis within the past month were about twice as likely to sometimes miss doses of their antiretroviral medications, according to a study published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases.

“[O]ur findings suggest that regular cannabis use by older people with HIV is associated with a greater risk of imperfect ART [antiretroviral therapy] adherence” compared with not using cannabis, the study authors concluded.

Estimates suggest that one quarter to one half of people living with HIV use cannabis, substantially higher than the proportion in the general population.

Once again, expecting responsible behavior from people proven NOT responsible enough to avoid HIV, which takes affirmative effort to contract, is a fool’s errand.

They were probably also much more likely to have missed paying their rent, to have forgotten to go to work, or to have neglected to check on their 2-year-old child playing in the bathtub (yeah, I saw that heart-breaking episode of "Dragnet").

They also think a bowl of radishes smothered in ketchup looks appetizing.

They caught AIDS, so they’re already behind the eight ball due to their chosen behavior.

It’s actually very rare for HIV carriers to be consistent with their medication regimen. These study participants are likely fudging their reported missed doses out of embarrassment and self-preservation. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be seeing these rapid mutations of HIV strains that is apparent. And it is almost inevitable that a carrier has to change treatment regimens at least once because the initial medication stopped working because of viral drug resistance. The carrier let the virus strain get a foothold.

Queer’s even have a term for this planned lapse in treatment: a “drug holiday.”
