German Chancellor Olaf Scholz formally announced Wednesday that after weeks of stalling and frustrating negotiations Berlin has agreed to send two battalions of Leopard 2 A6 tanks to Ukraine.
In a statement the government said it would initially send one company of 14 tanks to Kyiv, though its aim is to send up to 88 tanks from its own stockpiles.
Scholz said, "This decision follows our well-known line of supporting Ukraine to the best of our ability. We are acting in a closely coordinated manner internationally."
Some 15 other EU nations that possess the German-made tanks in their own stocks and had increased the pressure on Berlin in recent weeks to approve re-exports to Ukraine as the war nears the 12-month mark.
"Germany will issue the appropriate transfer permits to partner countries that want to quickly deliver Leopard 2 tanks from their stocks to Ukraine," confirmed the Wednesday statement.
It is unclear when the tanks from Germany or allied nations will be in Ukraine, though the statement said training Ukrainian troops in Germany would begin "quickly."...
Defense officials have said it makes better sense to employ Ukraine with the German-made tanks as there are "thousands" of them throughout Europe and training along with maintenance is far more manageable than on the more advanced Abrams tanks.

That training doesn’t have to be done in Ukraine. Could very well do it in Poland.
Poland has signed an agreement to buy 366 Abrams tanks anyway and has already had at least 7 delivered for training (maybe more by now).
That is the image that will spread around the world.

Any tank can go BOOM, the question is how many Russian BOOM's will these Leopards cause with their advanced thermal sights and excellent targeting system? Plus if it is damaged it has advanced crew protection, vs the T72's that act like jack-in-the-box.

Plus side is that it will be a good field test to see if the German tanks are any more effective than Russian tanks against modern anti-tank weapons.

They’ve used a bit, but not much. I’d watch for that to increase as more things are sent. It’s sheer insanity what the west is doing. There are no good guys, but all the citizens are the losers.

No, I think that at the tactical level they were simply supposed to kill and maim enemy troops. I suspect that they’ve achieved that goal in Ukraine just as American thermobaric weapons achieved similar goals elsewhere.
Problem with them is the short range (10 km) makes them liable to drone attacks and counter artillery fire. Also, I believe only a small amount were manufactured.
This is BS! We all think that Europe should take care of itself, however, this Ukrainian war was instigated by the US. If Europe follows Biden and other war mongers like Graham and Mcfall, it could very well push Putin further into retaliating.
