Good Lord it should be a given that no amount of lead should be allowed in baby food.

Current lab equipment can detect extremely tiny levels of lead, far less than harmful levels.

But current government doctrine is that there is NO safe level for lead, so the standard becomes “no detectable level”, a goalpost that moves as equipment gets more sensitive.

How does lead get into food? By being absorbed by plants from the soil.

All Maryland soils contain naturally-occurring background levels of lead, typically less than 50 ppm.

The elements are present almost everywhere, especially in the dirt used to grow vegetables. It is the levels of concentration that of any elements that raises its presence to dangerous levels. That lead is detected using mass spectroscopy; and, they are probably seeing levels that have no affect on a baby. It is probably impossible to totally remove any substance from our food chain. It is possible to to choose soil with the lowest levels compared to soil found in other locations.

More than likely, this is just more fear mongering.

Good Lord it should be a given that no amount of lead should be allowed in baby food.

That is a scientifically ignorant and politically irresponsible statement that is blissfully unaware of the implications of the phrase "no amount".

Lead is in the soil. It is unavoidable. We have made great strides in making food safe. This is a bureaucratic power grab.
