The West is poised to send nearly 200 battle tanks to Ukraine in a potential hammer blow that could help Kyiv win its war against Vladimir Putin...It brought the total number of tanks Kyiv can expect to have at its disposal to nearly 200, with potential for more...Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said the new tank deliveries "would bring nothing good to the future relations".

I’m not clear what Ukraine is winning. The battle lines seem stalemated, both sides punching it out to no apparent advantage. Maybe a little advance for the Russians at Bakhmut. As for the tanks, we have Javelin tank killers, so I assume Russia has something similar.

The real risk is that Russia may attempt to attack the armor en route, whether being shipped by sea or by rail, that would likely involve attacks on Nato territory. This move could provoke a larger war.

If they are thrown right into an offensive, maybe they won’t last long enough to ever come back for maintenance?

Not asking that to be funny or take sides, just that this war has been brutal on armored vehicles.

Is there an international black market for tanks?
Asking for a friend. :)

They tried but Ukrainians air defense from ground based units was taking them out apparently their comm is crap and their guidance systems are so bad they were using their cell phones for navigation. If you see aircraft or helicopters over Ukraine they are flying treetop banking up praying and spraying missiles and getting out of dodge
On top of that mission ready aircraft are scarce, aircrew scarcer, suffer from same thing the rest of the military does. Corruption which siphoned off
Military effectiveness

“From what I’m reading Ukraine will be getting tanks that are vastly superior to the Russian T-72’s they will be up against”

Not disputing this but how much tank on tank warfare is really going on. Someone needs to convince me??

Russia's history is to wear down opponents

Like in the Afghanistan War?

Remains to be seen if NATO will remain as committed as Russia.

By supplying tanks, NATO is showing their resolve and as long as costs to NATO are outdated military equipment and no loss of life, why should the resolve fade?

oh! I didn’t know that! I assumed Russia took out the Ukraine Airforce on day 1. I never hear anything about air battles and such in the news about the war.

They did but we've provided Ukraine with effective ground-air defense systems.

It's why Kiev doesn't look like Grozny. Russia can't risk losing aircraft which are an integral part of their nuclear deterrence.

I do have to wonder how effective these 200 tanks will be without trained maintenance crews. I work in Naval Aviation. A squadron of six helicopters has about 200 maintainers doing work round the clock to keep them flying. Not to mention the countless scheduled and unscheduled inspections, high-time components that need to be replaced at regular intervals, and broken components that need to be replaced immediately

And to facilitate all of this maintenance requires countless specialized tools, calibrated test sets, tons of support equipment, and administrators with computers keeping track of all of it.

And the tests sets and support equipment has their own division of maintainers who's job it is to make sure all of this equipment is properly maintained.

Granted, tanks don't fly so I'd guess their maintenance needs aren't nearly as rigid as aircraft but still, they're multi-million dollar, highly technically advanced assets and they do need skilled, trained maintainers and regular spare parts.

It's not nearly as simple as "Here's 200 tanks! Good luck!" The logistics behind deploying these assets are extensive and unless Ukraine is going to drive these tanks back to Poland for maintenance, I just don't see how this can be a successful endeavor without NATO boots on the ground helping them out.

But the Russians don’t control the air.

Thats been one of their ongoing problems. They seem to be unable to make a dent in the Ukrainian air defense system, based largely on S300 missiles. Russian SEAD seems very underdeveloped.

The Russians are limited to very low altitude close air support, which is dangerous versus manpads, of which Ukraine has lots.

And they use cruise missiles, which are only effective against fixed targets.

If Russia were able to overfly Ukraine with reasonable safety they could interdict the Ukrainians US-style, and if that were the case Russia would have won this long ago.

You can buy pretty much anything on Alibaba.com.
No black market needed.

Just recently, Ukraine has been shooting down nearly all of the cruise missiles and drones. Before long, they’ll be shooting ballistic missiles down, too (the main threat against civilians now). Quite a few nations have been contributing defense systems against attacks from the air. Ukraine has also been hitting Russian aircraft on the ground for a long time.

Ukraine has not won but they are wining as it stands now. Russia is really a third rate society that is allowed to play with the big guys because of its territory and the wealth within. Round one has plainly gone to Ukraine and not Russia. I seriously doubt Russia today has the heart to continue. They have lost wars in the past and their have usually been revolutions when that has happened. Time is on the Ukies side not Russias.

Amazing
So Allie’s were winning ww2 in 44 but still needed more tanks to replace loses. Guess we weren’t winning after all or we would have stopped build tanks in 44

Two hundred tanks... Maintenance, support, training, and transport. This is a massive logistic task. As well as the cost.

Exactly.

I didn't see your post when I posted my #49.

No doubt some will end up in Moscow’s annual May Red Square parade as trophies, the ones that made it across the two thousand kilometers to the Ukies Eastern Front.

This armor welfare give away is going to be a HUGE embarrassment to the collective West. They will be hunted down with more fervor than the M777’s.

Russia’s stealthiest fighter is the Su-57 which uses flat head Phillips head screws to hold its skin to the airframe. These things reflect radar and the plane might be a good 4th generation fighter but it is not a 5th generation stealth fighter in the same league as the F-22, Eurofighter, F-35, or even the latest versions of the F-15, F-18, and F-16.

It doesn’t have the vectored thrust that makes the F-22 so deadly because the Russians can’t figure it out. That was supposed to be the big deal with the Su-57 and the designers never delivered.

So Russia’s best planes are 4th generation and NATO has fifth generation.

It’ll be like clubbing baby seals for the NATO pilots.
