Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), one of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s (I-Ariz.) best friends in the Senate, is urging the newly independent senator to caucus with Republicans.
Sinema announced last month that she was leaving the Democratic Party and was registering as an independent. She also said at that time that she wouldn’t caucus with Republicans. But Thune points out that Sinema has worked closely with several Republicans to advance legislation and that if she’s going to run for re-election, it will make the race far less complicated.
On Monday, Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego announced that he was running in the Democratic primary. This creates a dilemma for both parties as most national Democrats are no more eager to challenge an incumbent senator from their own party than Republicans want to take down a potential ally.
“Obviously we’d love to have her become a Republican or at least caucus [with] Republicans. That would make things a little more clear,” Thune said.
Senate Democrats on Monday also dodged questions about whether they would support Sinema’s reelection bid if she winds up in a race against Gallego or another Democratic nominee.
“Too soon. Too soon,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.).
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Gary Peters (Mich.) on Monday acknowledged that Gallego is running but did not say whether he would endorse him or another Democrat against Sinema.
Sinema has gotten into trouble with national Democrats over her stubborn refusal to vote for trillion-dollar “pandemic relief” bills that she felt weren’t necessary. Ultimately, she and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) voted for a much-slimmed-down package of goodies.

Why not? This is Sinema’s last term, the “ballots” produced in the next “election” will ensure she will lose re-election.
i wouldn’t mind caucusing with her for a night or two
RE: the “ballots” produced in the next “election” will ensure she will lose re-election.
You forgot to add — In Favor of a Democrat ( as usual ).
I don’t care if she ‘caucuses’ with them as long as she votes with them.
A few more dems switching to Independent would be good too.
Kyrsten Of Davos what a great addition to the GOP...sarc
Spoken like a true globalist Mr. Thune.
Why bother? Keep her as an independent, but make sure people know that she still identifies as democrat and her senate votes keep indicating that she’s a democrat.
Better to keep showing her as a democrat, and before we know it, the 2024 election cycle will be here and she can be voted out.
Thune is one of “Mitch the Bitch’s” GOONS. He will be primary-ed out in 2024!
What the hell would Sen. Thun know about Republicans?
I would not trust her, As far as I can Throw her.
Kind of surprised they haven’t gotten rid of the term “Whip” yet.
Doesn’t she play for the other team?
So the GOP has a Dem running that will split the Sinema vote and all they have to do is run a quality conservative Republican to win the seat. So the GOP solution - try to get a Democrat to join the party and further dilute it.
Especially in the same sentence as Sinema.
Sounds like she might like that kind of thing.
She’s a rat. Nothing has changed by registering as an independent.
She knew a Dem would primary her on the D line so now she just hopes the Dem and the Republican get fewer votes than her. But I think it could backfire if the GOP had a great candidate.
Arizona is going to be a hard nut to crack for the Republicans. The rats have the cheating enshrined in that state!
Thune just won re election...it’s eb5 rounds that’s up next
