The dramatic fight for Soledar, part of the Battle of Bakhmut, is over — although Ukraine's leadership is still reluctant to acknowledge the loss.
As a result of a localized offensive operation in January, Russian forces managed to gnaw through Ukrainian defenses and, after fierce urban fighting, seize what's left of the industrial town of 10,000.
Although fighting in the area continues, The Kyiv Independent sources, as well as international monitors, all fully agree Ukraine doesn’t control the town.
It's the first noticeable Russian success since their forces captured Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk after fierce fighting in June and July.

Is that that old cold war mindset? Why is the Russian man bad?
We just have to be a bit better than everywhere else. Thankfully, the Chicoms and Euro socialists just can’t help themselves.
Just in case there’s few here who still believe Soledar is Ukrainian.
We’re year a year in and you’re still posting about random Ukrainian villages. Just in case you can’t see how utterly hopeless the Russian position is.
I’m reading that Russia has and is continuing forward from several directions and Ukraines taking a beating.....this from people oon line and on the web tracking movments. Videos also indicate this.
Why would we care if Russia is threatening to nuke us? /sarc. The weakness and defeatism of the Putin fan club is never ending. Some conservatives are so broken and defeated all they can do is hope Putin wins for us I guess.
I oppose any war not passed as law by the US Congress, as the Constitution authorized.
Our last legal war was WWII.
All the rest were Democrat BS wastes of our soldiers lives.
Full disclosure; I’m a Vietnam era VET service connected disabled.
Language, man.
“Why did we give a shit when the Japanese bombed
our Territory?”
You win this week’s award for stupidest guy on Free Republic.
With every defeat, the Ukraine Rah-rah brigade gets more shrill and blind talking about the fall of Russia and/or death of Putin. Ukraine Victory is just around the corner. Another few tanks, a few more rockets, just a bit more help and the Orks will be running for the border as Ukraine slips, dips and turns into a bloodbath. Reminds me more and more of WW I. One more charge across No Man’s Land—one more victory and the enemy lines will break. Casualties in an over the top attack in WW I were 80%. Everyday is like Pickett’s Charge—until one side runs out of cannon fodder. END THE WAR NOW! No winners here save for those who are still alive at the end.
😂The only ones here talking about the Ukrainians marching on Moscow are the Putin fans.
Makes LITTLE difference long-term. Ukraine’s positions at Bakhmut were known by military experts to be untenable. RuSSia’s heaviest concentrations of troops are in the area, whereas Ukraine has been bleeding other areas to resupply Bakhmut.
During WWII, the allies were often beaten back briefly during individual battles, but the main lines always advanced.
The RuSSian military is still pathetic and the main Ukrainian advance will continue.
If history teaches us anything it is that America must always have an enemy for the Forever War must continue. As soon as one war ends they start another.
” the main Ukrainian advance will continue”
What is the main Ukrainian advance?
Are they advancing somewhere?
Why is that not plastered across every MSM rag in the western world?
Why did we give a shit when the Japanese bombed
our Territory? It wasn’t even a state then.
************
We gave a shit because we had a naval base there and lost a bunch of people and ships.
In the Ukraine we decided that they needed to join the West and become an ally of the United States. This alliance also includes military and financial arrangements that benefit Washington DC & Kiev instead of Moscow & Kiev.
The Russian Establishment led by “Mad Vlad” (Who is a nut when it comes to Ukraine, The West, & democracy) decided to roll the dice and invaded Ukraine.
It didn’t happen in a vacuum.
At the end of the W Bush Presidency, we signed a stupid agreement called the US Ukraine Charter on Strategic Partnership. Basically we wanted a new ally, an ally we didn’t need or care about for over 200 years. An ally with zero historic, economic, or cultural ties to the US. An ally that means nothing for the security of the US and can only be a drain of “blood & treasure” moving forward.
On Nov 10, 2021 Blinken and his Ukrainian counterpart updated the stupid charter. It included an “unclear path” for Ukraine joining a military alliance called NATO. Another caveat was the United States proclaiming that we will never recognize a Russian Crimea.(Sounds like we want Crimea controlled by our Ukraine puppet)
Our foreign policy is in the hands of people who think the way to put out fires, is to hook a fire hose up to a tanker full of gasoline and start spraying.
Funny how we had cordial relations with the Czars when they were doing much worse things.
I guess you don’t understand sarcasm or rheortic.
I was a soldier and I’d kill any SOB that attacked my shipmates
Even if they were from Washington DC.
