As I understand it, a SMG is a term coined by the Developer of the Thompson, because it fired pistol rounds and not rifle rounds, which made him feel like it was not worthy to be called a machine gun.

My bad. Try this one. Yes, you can own machineguns in most US states. $200 tax stamp, a ton of patience and about a year of ATF processing. Impact Guns is a class III dealer. Their stock has diminished, looks like most stock has been purchased.
Maybe if they made murder illegal....
