“Now, there is a serious discussion … about our capacity to defend ourselves, whether we can do it ourselves, or whether we should be part of a larger alliance,” Sandu said.
“And if we come, at some point, to the conclusion as a nation that we need to change neutrality, this should happen through a democratic process.”
Sandu stressed that Chisinau’s strengthening of its own defense, contrary to Russia's claims, is not a provocation against anyone, including against the unrecognized Transnistria – a region of Moldova which hosts a Russian military base.
“Moldova is a peaceful country,” she said.

I wonder if the Romanians would make a move to annex Moldova.
Immediately I think of that Seinfeld episode.
Mulva?
Moldova wouldn’t add much to Romania or NATO. One of mom’s friends is from there and says it’s very poor. She had no opportunities there.
An exchange student I met while on vacation told me the same.
They do have a strong agricultural sector.
Mulva?
They best hurry...as in REALLY HURRY.
If the ammo dump at Cobasna is hit no one will be going anywhere. Upwards of 20,000 tons.
Involuntary annexation? Pretty much zero chance. They are on quite good terms.
Both countries have flirted with the idea of re-unification. Before the war, it was a fairly popular idea in Romania, but less so in Moldova (about 40% in 2021). Since Russia invaded, Moldovans have become much more open to the idea. Since Moldova is historically part of Romania, most Moldovans can claim Romanian citizenship by birthright. Before the war, about 1/3 of Moldovans had dual citizenship with Romania, many so they could easily move throughout the EU. That number is also rising since the invasion of Ukraine, and there is a years long wait for a Romanian passport.
It would add a defense line along the Dneister, which defines the Eastern border of Moldavia. Its a pretty good obstacle.
And there are a couple of other good river lines inside Moldavia which would also work, like the Prut.
Moldavia would, at least, add defensive geography to the southern flank of NATO.
We cared a lot about it a few years ago, when W was president. Russia has cared a lot about it too. It has to be important strategically for those two things to be true.
Full disclosure: one of my sister cities is Balti (pronounced “belts”), Moldova’s #2 city after Chisinau. Our other sister cities (e.g. Imabari in Japan) are primarily cultural exchanges, while Balti has been primarily a charitable venture.
Moldova’s one ace in the hole is that no one really wants to take over its problems, whether Romania, Ukraine, or Russia, so it’s likely to remain independent.
Moldova would also be useless to NATO, but then NATO lost its reason for being back in 1990, it just hasn’t figured that out yet.
If I recall correctly, Hunter Biden intervened on behalf of Burkina Faso, and they are currently at the top of the list. However, the list changes from time to time, whenever new bidsrequests are received...
;>)
Moldova? Omg...we would go to WAR TO SAVE MOLDOVA?
It’s Dolores!
See 14.
Russia is going to be attacking Ukraine from there soon enough.
I am sure the Moldovans will be happy to shoot at them with NATO weapons.
How many independent nations does Russia have to invade before they deserve an ass whoopin?
Sounds like they are TRYING TO BANKRUPT US and use ALL of our weapons !
Who were those weapons produced to fight?
Just curious.
(Hint: We wouldn’t be using artillery and anti tank weapons against China.)
Why? The Russians keep getting pushed farther back from the Moldovan border.
“Why? The Russians keep getting pushed farther back from the Moldovan border.”
CNN won’t tell you, but others will - watch Zaporozhye as the fighting is moving there, and once that city is liberated, it’s a cakewalk to Moldova.
