On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher stated that he understands Republicans saying that “an adult has to cut up the credit card” after overspending on the coronavirus that ended up being stolen.
Maher said that tying spending cuts to increasing the ceiling is “Republicans’ way of saying, Democrats spend too much money, of course, only when they’re not president. When a Republican is president, it’s never a problem, the debt ceiling and then spending money is never a problem.” And spending increased under the Trump administration without protest from Republicans.

Here’s a fun converter of any unit of measure to any other:

I agree with you. One of the bedrocks of civilization is the contract. You buy a car from me and we sign a contract. You pay me the agreed upon price, and I hand over the car. I can’t just say, “Sorry, but I can’t afford to part with this car. And I’m keeping your money.”
Social Security is of course a contract. So the same argument applies.
Fix the federal deficit. But do it without breaking any contracts.
And there are some here who would eliminate social security... Touching something that all of us have paid into is a sure way to get kicked out of office. And for the big talkers who whine about saving better....life happens and it doesn’t always work out for the best.
Ever notice it’s always entitlements that are the first cut everybody wants to make?? How about cutting foreign aid, defense spending, money for hiking trails, subsidizing every green energy scheme that comes along and so on. Oh no...that’s too practical.
So I agree trader the idea is stupid...but then again if one considers the source it fits that mindset.
“ an adult has to cut up the credit card” after overspending on the coronavirus that ended up being stolen”
Does he have a clue that we are 30 trillion in debt?
So you got yours, and F everyone else. Amirite?
Here’s a path to a solution that requires a brain and a heart, neither of which you obviously have:
Pick the right actuarial age, maybe it’s 45, maybe it’s 50. That part I leave to the actuaries. Offer those individuals to continue benefits as before for those over that age.
For those younger (mandatory), and for those who opt for this, provide a one-time buyout into a private account. Again, the exact numbers I leave to the actuaries.
The investment vehicles would be similar to the “Target 20xx” accounts that many investment houses offer today. But from that point on, individuals are on their own.
This is all very high level, and some more extreme cases will fall through the cracks. Yes, there will be pain. Hopefully, families and charities can ease that pain. But properly done, it will avoid the coming certain disaster.
Similar programs to be created for Medicare.
Every year that passes by the unfunded future liabilities will shrink as people die off. Eventually, 40 or 50 years later, the unfunded liabilities will be zero.
Lets punish the people that paid into the Ponzi scheme first? How moronic is that? How about kicking off all the people that never paid a dime into the system first and cut welfare.
But it is a complete falsehood that there is any set-aside money or pension for you or me.
A half century ago LBJ stole that money and it has since been a part of all revenues. It is spent just like any other revenue.
In this sense, there is no Social Security account or set of pensions for SSN recipients.
The upside, if there is one, is that we can always allow people, going forward, to opt out of the conventional SS and thus privatize SS. Where this has been done it has been very successful.
In a few years most young people will have experience and confidence in individual investing and privatizing SS will be an easy sell.
See this article and this website about privatization of social security in Chile and Jose Pinera, the American-trained economist who did it.

Sorry I don't know how to do a hyperlink.
Are you joking?
No. That’s not tge best way. Soc sec payments were taken away from the now recipients through forc. That money coul otherwise have been invested by the payers
That would be theft.
It’s a bad system. My grandparents said it was a bad idea when they were young and watched it start Like any bad idea we see now.
“If spending growth were set below revenue growth deficits would decline.”
And if the ocean was filled with wine we could take a dip and have a good time. No point in speculating about things that the US congress will never do in a million years.
Well, I support people that are truly disabled. No reason for someone with CP or issues to be on the streets.
Means test payouts. No reason someone with enough to get by fine on needs entitlements.
Cut cut cut. Doesn’t matter how much you paid in, the status quo doesn’t work.
Close all non essential government agencies.
Cut all government pay by 25%
Before they can touch social security they have to cut welfare, food stamps, and section 8.
Hiring freeze on all federal hiring.
Cut Congress pay 10%, every year, until we have a balanced budget.
I am sorry dear Democrats, but the spending that happened in the initial days of Covid was appropriate. Telling businesses they HAD to shutdown for 2 weeks wasn’t the issue. The problem accelerated as 2 weeks turned into months.
Governors and States that failed to restore order as quickly as possible should be held to account.
Medical experts that choked the life out of the economy need to be held to account.
And yes, the spending party is over. Cut up the credit card.
Hey Bill, it’s a Uniparty when it comes to spending, calm down.
The problem is, everybody says “Cut the Credit Card”, until it comes time to cut their pet program.
“To get the majority of the economics and government studies professoriat to believe and teach this Marxist concept is one of the greatest victories of the 1900- Progressive movement. ”
This is where it all started. Woodrow Wilson was probably the worst President in U.S. history. He started into motion the policies that haunt us today.
“ Let’s punish the people that paid into the Ponzi scheme first? How moronic is that? How about kicking off all the people that never paid a dime into the system first and cut welfare.”
SS is the last place to take it from. The payouts into that fund were forced to give it by the same people who would refuse tho give it back. That’s the definition of theft
Hard working stiffs and reitired hard working stiffs/social security investors and future recipients are also the ones paying taxes and footing the bill for government spending
Tge pentagon just reported 280 million unaccounted for. No one cares. No one talks about it
Jo Biden as senator devised the bill that takes money from seniors. Yes. Social security income is taxed. Those people have already paid tax on that revenue. It’s taxed again.
They cut ss and tgat bill would still be there
This is what’s going on. Duh no one signing up for the military to defend this bs
“ Means test payouts. No reason someone with enough to get by fine on needs entitlements.”
Had a day off recently- I work weekends. At the mall on a Wednesday morning there were large crowds
Men.
No one’s working.
They can afford to not work and shop pin an upscale mall
People talk about cutting social security from people who worked and did not go to the mall on a Wednesday?
It is intended to be rerouted to the DNC and friends.
How do you suppose they pay all of those pot heads to drop campaign literature on every doorstep for every state and local race?
Spending was definitely one area Trump’s outsider status harmed his ability to govern effectively.
Well Trump is now saying that we need to cut spending. So there's that.
