Exclusive: Google parent to lay off 12,000 workers in latest blow to tech

Jan 20 (Reuters) - Google's parent Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) is eliminating about 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, it said Friday, as Silicon Valley reels from recent layoffs and faces a troubled outlook.

Alphabet, whose shares rose 3% in pre-market trading, is making the cuts just as the U.S. company confronts a threat to its long-held perch atop the technology sector.

For years Alphabet has attracted top talent to build Google, YouTube and other products that reach billions of users, but it is now locked in competition with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) in a burgeoning area known as generative artificial intelligence.

It’s not all coders being laid off.

“China is opening a new coal power plant every 4-5 days.”

Not saying you are wrong but where did you get that statistic from?

China currently has 1,118 coal power plants in operation, and another coal plant coming online every 4-5 days would be a minimum of 73 plants per year. That’s a lot of plants requiring a lot of coal.

*** Alphabet’s layoffs followed a review of its people and priorities, leading to a workforce reduction hitting various geographies, Pichai said. Among those losing their jobs are recruiters, corporate staff and people working on engineering and product teams, he added.***

Hope he’s not in one of these positions.

One of my sons best friends graduated from WPI with a BS in robotics. He was hired straight out of college making just under $150K. He works on robots that handle/move things around warehouses/etc. The company he works for in Cambridge, MA was just bought by WALMART.

My son immediately sent him a GIF of a Walmart greeter wearing a Blue Apron.

Thanks. He *is* in one of those roles (engineering).
On the other hand. that description “recruiters, corporate staff and people working on engineering and product teams” pretty much encompasses everyone at Gurgle. (Except maybe the diversity, equity, inclusion “team”.)

Yes, then I will pray for him. I know another man with a young family that works for Google. They will both be in my prayers.

Although this includes natural gas, from Bloomberg:

“Some 70 gigawatts of fossil fuel capacity will be added in 2023, up from 40 gigawatts last year...”

From Oil Price:

“China produced a record amount of coal last year, although output ended the year with a decline amid the latest surge in Covid infections. Total Chinese coal output for the year reached 4.496 billion tons, which was a 9-percent increase compared to 2021, according to official statistics data.”

Until being bought out by Walmart, my husband may have used the robots that your son’s friend worked on. He does supply chain engineering. They win decent contracts in the third party logistics business because the robots have become cheaper than human labor, at least in many cases.

I honestly do not know the name of the company. Just that they were started by some big brain types that went to MIT.

My son's friend is also a big brain type. He was the Salutatorian of their high school class. My son was number ten.
I still think of him as a kid because they have known each other since Cub Scouts/1st grade.

I’ve read that the ChiCom plan is to transition personal / commercial transportation to battery cars / trucks powered by coal generating plants and conserve petroleum for the military.

I work in the very same industry. Any real white male conservative isn’t going to work for an overly woke company and sell out their firmly held beliefs. I had and still have opportunities on the table from these very same wokesters that I will not take because of that.

I appreciate your prayers; I’ll align with you in prayer for the man you mentioned, and others similarly affected.

Zero, they won’t fire the H1-B workers since they can rape them financially. More white males down the wood chipper.

Right about that.

Every large corporation I can think of is woke.
Between HR and ESG, all major companies bend the knee.
I know tons of conservatives who work at “woke” companies.
There aren’t enough positions, especially in certain fields, to dismiss employment because they don’t follow one’s beliefs.

In tech, especially security, there are so many they cannot be filled so you can choose.

I reached out to the guy I was telling you about. He got good news that he and his team are safe, but he has a lot of friends (with families) that were notified that today is their last day. Fortunately, Google just gave out their bonuses this week. I have to say this beats laying people off at Thanksgiving or Christmas, as happened to my husband a few years ago.

So this will be pretty much at least 6 months of pay for those affected, and will be more for those who have been with the company for longer. I hope 6 months is enough time to help some of them find new work. I told him we will keep his friends and their families in our prayers, and to please pass that along to them.

Do you think it was called Alert Innovations? They were based in Boston, and it looks like Walmart acquired them.
