A New Mexico prosecutor on Thursday charged actor Alec Baldwin and others in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of Western “Rust.”

District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies announced involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin and the film’s armorer after more than a year of investigation into the October 2021 shooting on a film set outside Santa Fe.

Assistant director David Halls has signed a plea agreement for the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon, the prosecutor said in a statement.

“After a thorough review of the evidence and the laws of the state of New Mexico, I have determined that there is sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against Alec Baldwin and other members of the ‘Rust’ film crew,” Carmack-Altwies said.

I drove interstate trucks for years. The driver is responsible for securing the load.

Exactly. You can’t rely upon other people to the degree that you wish you could.

He pulled the trigger. How is the gun supposed to know it was only pretend.
If you pulled a trigger, with the intent of only pretending to fire a gun but it goes off, are you not liable?

Do actors have intent immunity for their jobs?

That’s incorrect. It is never the actor’s job to check a firearm. That responsibility always belongs to the armorer. It’s basically a ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’ sort of thing. One person - the armorer (and their group) is responsible for making sure the firearms are safe for use. Again, if an actor opens a weapon to check, CUT is called, the armorer takes the firearm, rechecks everything, and then hands it back. Believe it or not, most Hollywood folks don’t know anything about firearms. Armorers do, and it’s their job on set to make sure safety protocols are followed.
