Texas GOP: Speaker Dade Phelan is ‘Teaming Up With Democrats’ to Kill [Republican] Priorities
Texas Scorecard ^ | 1/18/2023 | Brandon Waltens

With the legislative session now underway, the Republican Party of Texas is taking their fight to prevent Democrat lawmakers from being placed in powerful leadership positions to a new level, airing a radio ad in House Speaker Dade Phelan’s district that encourages his constituents to urge him to only appoint Republicans as committee chairs.

“Democrats tried to turn Texas blue. But Texas voters told them no. We voted Republican all the way down the ticket,” begins the 60-second spot released on Wednesday. “But House Speaker Dade Phelan thinks Democrats should still run the show. That’s why he’s planning to put Democrats in charge of nearly half the committees in the Texas House.”

The radio spot accuses Phelan of “teaming up with Democrats” to kill Republican priorities.

In fact, banning Democrat chairs is itself one of the eight legislative priorities, as selected by the thousands of delegates to the party’s biennial convention last year. Additionally, 81 percent of Republican voters in Texas say they support a ban on Democrat chairs.

But House Speaker Dade Phelan (R–Beaumont) has been a staunch advocate for putting Democrats in charge, with nearly 40 percent of House committees chaired by Democrats last session. Despite that, Phelan was re-elected last week by every Democrat in the chamber and all but three Republicans.

When some Republican lawmakers attempted to change the rules of the House to prevent the minority party from chairing committees, Phelan blocked the vote from happening in a heavily criticized parliamentary ruling.

Committee chair appointments are made solely by the speaker of the House. It is expected Phelan will announce those appointments within the next few weeks. Texas GOP Chairman Matt Rinaldi says the ruling makes it clear that Phelan alone has the power to determine whether Democrats are put in powerful leadership positions.

In Texas, all Democrats team up with enough RINOs to always elect a RINO house speaker. In turn, the speaker appoints Democrat chairs for about half of the committees. The result is that Democrats are then able to block many important Republican priorities year-after-year. This is despite the fact that Republicans hold significant majorities in both houses. Since electing a RINO speaker is inevitable, most of the remaining Republicans vote for the speaker do avoid being punished for their position. Efforts to stop this egregious practice have, so far, been unsuccessful.

Be sure to listen to the radio ad at the link.

If democrats weren’t stupid, Beto would have ran on cutting property taxes 15% and capping unimproved increases at a max of 3% per year (not the current 10%).

Governor Wheels would have been kicked to the curb.

Good thing democrats are stupid.

Too bad the Republicans are stupider.

“In Texas, all Democrats team up with enough RINOs to always elect a RINO house speaker. “

This is the difference. The rats would NEVER allow such a thing. With the rats a 1 vote majority is as good as 100 vote majority. The rats conduct nation killing political war, the GOP plays card games or they are outright collaborators

They don’t call Republicans the stupid party for nothing. Imagine this happening in NY, CA or other democrat stronghold. Idiots.

You’ve just read why Beto couldn’t do that. Not that running on a bald faced lie ever mattered to a democrat... And why Abbott can’t always do what he’d like. The governorship here in Texas carries limited power compared to many other states. Abbott is pretty good, considering that. Property tax is a big issue, but not a defining issue. One of my friends told me only about 10% of the people actually own any property, and it just isn’t a concern to them. And yes, everyone knows that renters get hit with the bill too, it isn’t the same as having to cough up thousands at one time to just to stay in the home you’ve managed to finally get paid for.

This is the result of the ludicrous and ridiculous logic of voting for the lesser of two evils. You can’t fix stupid. They’ll do it again next election, expecting different results, because they’re just that thick in the head.

Seems to me to primary all the GOPers that voted for him for speaker. You won’t get them all, but knock off a half dozen per cycle will start to make a dent in just 4 years. Others will who barely survive will get the message.

Abbott was all excited on how he was going to spend the $36 Billion with a B, surplus.

The “governor has limited power” schtick is getting pretty old. He’s supposed to be the leader of the party, not a mascot.

Four people in my neighborhood sold their house to Californians and moved to Florida.

Maybe they are on to something.

They are all Bush Rove guys.

Beaumont TX isn’t TX, it’s west Louisiana, will all the back slapping and glad handing that entails. Shithole swamp people go cha-ching when they think of all of the Other People’s Money they’ll get to polish their sweaty turd districts, so Californians will want to move there, too.

They think they are missing out on something.

TX is starting to get stale

I have close friends in Florida who would like to move to Texas. Florida isn’t all that great. They do have a good governor. But the fact that Abbott has limited power compared to some other states governors isn’t getting old. It’s just a fact. Most of us Texans prefer to be left alone and prefer mascots over dictators. If you are a Texan and don’t like it here...Well....

You must pay your property tax via escrow and not write a check twice a year.

My property tax has gone up 60% in the last 5 years.

All Governor Wheels does is daydream how to spend his windfall. Even California can only raise property tax 3% per year... At least that is what all my new California neighbors tell me.

When I move, I’ll be sure to sell my house to a nice gay couple that won’t complain about high property taxes... Because high property taxes are just the price you have to pay to call yourself Texan.
