WILBRAHAM, Mass. — For nearly a year and a half, a Massachusetts high school has been lit up around the clock because the district can’t turn off the roughly 7,000 lights in the sprawling building.
The lighting system was installed at Minnechaug Regional High School when it was built over a decade ago and was intended to save money and energy. But ever since the software that runs it failed on Aug. 24, 2021, the lights in the Springfield suburbs school have been on continuously, costing taxpayers a small fortune.
“We are very much aware this is costing taxpayers a significant amount of money,” Aaron Osborne, the assistant superintendent of finance at the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, told NBC News. “And we have been doing everything we can to get this problem solved.”

> Back when Chevy was doing those smarmy inane “real people” commercials... <
Now that you mention it, some guy on YouTube is doing wickedly funny parodies of those commercials. Here’s one:
I’m sorry to say it - but they are public-school educators:
They are simply too stupid and bureaucratic to do it.
That’s more or less my point. Light switches are easy and cheap. When they break, you go to Lowes and buy new ones.
10 minutes for the problem and 24 hours for the celebration...
Something just ain’t right about this story....
The video is good. The comments are EPIC!
“Automation isn’t for everything”
Or for everyone.
But you have to have the wiring in place first.
Across South St. from the WTC mid 80s, the then new World Financial Center (200 Liberty St. today) avoided the mistake made in the WTC. Still no wall switches, but they used “high tech” motion sensor on/off light switches for individual offices. Sensitivity was a big problem. Office occupants used oscillating fans to keep the lights on while sitting at desks
Dude, you ain't never lied!
If people give software this level of control over things that people need and use, then this kind of thing will happen. Remember Hal in 2001? It was given that control and we saw what happened.
Having observed people for some time, I predict that major aspects of human life will be put under the total control of programs. The programs will be called AI so as to impress the folks and make them think that it is intelligent and nothing can go wrong.
Having had my hands in quite a few programs, I know that the program does what the program code tells it to do, not what you want it to do. The results can be unpredictable.
For the school: cut the power to the school. Install switches. Turn on the power. Fire dumb people who have total faith in software.
Plan B:
Take the additional electric bill and send invoices to all school board members.
Put liens on their assets until the problem is solved.
It would be amazing how fast it would be fixed!
Life is all about motivation...
Note to self; if your computer starts singing “Daisy...” it’s likely going to be a bad day.
Pull the meter.
SNAFU....the entire corrupt govt. is F’ed up.
SNAFU....the entire corrupt govt. is F’ed up.
Send a few Georgia Tech boys up there for a day or two.
10 minutes for the problem and 24 hours for the celebration...

That sounds about right. Celebration paid for by the twits who initially wanted the system.
This cutting edge (at the time) “green” technology was installed to save money and energy but has ended up costing them more than a simple tried and true system would to operate. Evidently, there was no redundancy built into this system as well. Not to mention the amount of money to repair or replace the original lighting system is probably greater than the original cost.
Find the computer remove Windows and install Linux ,LOL
