Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, an ally of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, warned NATO on Thursday that the defeat of Russia in Ukraine could trigger a nuclear war.
Striking a similar tone at what he described as an anxious time for the country, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church said trying to destroy Russia would mean the end of the world.

Asked if Medvedev's remarks signified that Russia was escalating the crisis to a new level, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "No, it absolutely does not mean that."

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, said in a sermon: "We pray to the Lord that he bring the madmen to reason and help them understand that any desire to destroy Russia will mean the end of the world."
"Today is an alarming time," state news agency RIA quoted him as saying. "But we believe that the Lord will not leave Russian land."

I think you correctly identified the takeaway, or at least the new information presented here. The nuke threats aren’t new, but this would indicate an increased probability they could be used at some point.
Most people don’t realize it, but Medvedev did serve as Russian President for several years in place of Putin, so he likely has a huge group of supporters in Russia who still wish he was President, instead of Putin. And from our perspective, based on his constant references to Armageddon, he may be even worse than Putin if he becomes President somehow again.
It’s still too early to know how this will play out, but this is simply further proof it’s being ratcheted up further every day.
I picture him as a cheerleader on the sidelines cheering on his leader on the field lol. He’s no Dallas cowboy foxy lady though lol
What is he saying? that if he can’t win , he’s gonna stomp his foot, get all pissy and nuke the world? That would be the end of Russia if he tried it. I doubt he’s insane.
Russia wants land and petroleum resources located in Ukraine.
Anything else is bafflegab and propaganda.
Agreed but my take is:
In a world where the history of nuclear weapons and their destructive power can do to human beings is well known (beyond 1945), and one in which every country (including Russia) has plainly said that the use should be unthinkable, now this past year Medveded has waved this threat numerous times.
The only others who have done this kind of irresponsible talk is the Kims of North Korea.
The next time the Russians and the US sit down to a round of SALT or whatever talks, these types of public announcements need to be discussed.
We need to let them know that there can never be a reduction in our arms if their attitude is to threaten us with nuclear war every time they find themselves in trouble.
Jaw, Jaw is better than war, war, as Churchill said. However, we should all-as a country—be pissed about what Medveded said, and that needs to be a consideration for our own nuclear capabilities. Because those warheads won’t care if you are a conservative, a Republican, hate Biden and Obama, hate the Woke... They’ll kill you just the same. So the threat here isn’t against this abstract thing we know as government, or the part controlled by democrats or bureaucrats, but all of us, the country and the people.
Bring back Reagan’s Space-based Defense Initiative. What little we funded since 1984 needs to be filled up.
“Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, said in a sermon: “We pray to the Lord that he bring the madmen to reason and help them understand that any desire to destroy Russia will mean the end of the world.”
His comments only show is a partnered with Putin in the “greater Russian empire” theme, lying when he refers to someone who might “destroy Russia” as he and Putin seek to destroy what the world knows as Ukraine.
Sure!We should allow Russia to continue attacking smaller nations or else we get attacked by nuclear weapons.
As much as I hate seeing the U.S. involved in this issue, we need to make Russia realize that making nuclear threats would be a terrible mistake for them.
Russia always acts like a spoiled brat when they don’t get their own way.
During the Period from the 1960’s through the 1990’s when the Soviet Union dissolved, I can’t even recall all of the time the big bad bear was going to attack the west with nuclear missiles. It does get tiring after a while.
No one here with a brain thinks you're anything but a moron and liar, Marcus. You're a joke.
Tell your Medvedev to put down the bottle.
This guy has gone from being the voice or reason when he was President to a lunatic now. Maybe he does that to avoid Putin’s assassins?
The West is in desperation mode. They are throwing feces against the wall and hoping something sticks. Completely bereft of strategy. The decision to try to send U.K. and German tanks to Ukraine is the most recent indicator that London, Berlin and Washington are hitting the panic button.
Russian military forces, with the Wagner Group leading the charge, has breached the Bakhmut, Soledar, Siversk line of defense. While Ukrainian troops continue to occupy Bakhmut and Siversk, the Russians are grinding on and appear to have effected a tactical encirclement of Bakhmut. Taking Bakhmut and clearing settlements to the south of Ukrainian forces is a critical step in forging genuine security for Donetsk. When Bakhmut falls expect an uptick in the wailing and gnashing of teeth in London and Washington. They will be tempted to launch more desperate gambits.
Update on the conflict in Ukraine for January 18, 2023.
- Bakhmut faces encirclement by Russian forces;
- The Netherlands is considering sending Patriot missile systems after West blames Russia for residential building strike;
- Ukrainian presidential adviser Arestovich has resigned after suggesting the building was hit because of a failed Ukrainian interception of a Russian cruise missile;
- The building strike appears to be serving as a pretext for a planned escalation by the US and its allies;
- Ukraine also lost its interior minister to a helicopter crash;
- The Western media admits current aid to Ukraine is not sufficient, although suggested increases will unlikely turn the tide;
- The US and its allies are preparing for their monthly meeting discussing expanded military aid to Ukraine on January 20, 2023;
If the canned sunshine hits the fan I hope you survive to suffer in its aftermath.
Medvedev was only “President” because Putin was term limited and Putin was Prime Minister and the one actually in charge.
Kermit the Frog had more of a chance of turning on Jim Henson that Medvedev does on Putin.
Wow, a Russian Orthodox sedan bridge boat.
Well good! We are going to war with Russia. It’s about time. Since it is inevitable, I suggest we just drop a nukes now and get it over with. Spring planting and all.
Russia has shown itself to be a paper tiger with nukes

Funny, we didn’t threaten to nuke them when their pilots were shooting ours down in the skies over Korea during the Korean war.
We didn’t threaten to nuke them once again when their pilots and SAM crews were shooting down our pilots in vietnam.
Nor did we threaten to nuke them in the over 20 other instances where they shot down our aircraft during the cold war.
Hell, in Vietnam, they provided more military equipment to the NVA than what we’re supplying to Ukraine.
